Muslim Groups Take Issue With McCain's Vocabulary
Monday, April 21, 2008
By Brit Hume

Word Play

A coalition of American Muslim groups is demanding that presumptive Republican nominee John McCain stop using the word "Islamic" to describe terrorists. The Washington Times reports Islamic Society of North America's secretary general wants McCain to use something he calls "more acceptable to the Muslim community."

"You want to call them terrorist criminals, fine. But adding the word 'Muslim' or 'Islamic' certainly doesn't help our cause as Americans... It paints an entire community of believers, 1.2 billion in total, in a very negative way."

But McCain strategist Steve Schmidt says there will be no changes. "The reality is, the hateful ideology which underpins bin Ladenism is properly described as radical Islamic extremism. Senator McCain refers to it that way because that is what it is."

Certainly Osama Bin Laden {AKA Osama Bin Hiden} wants his organisation to be known as Islamic.

President Bush has been eager to draw a distinction between the violent terrorist and the rest of Islam  , he can be quoted many times saying that Islam is a "religion of peace".

Is this a polite fiction?

Islam is a religion of peace... except when it isn't.

Christianity is another religion of peace... except when it isn't. Hitler went through catechism classes, and maybe so did Mussolini.

Most religions consider themselves to be the one true religion and superior to all the others.

What is certain, from a logical standpoint, is that one of them is the One True Religion... or none is. Maybe there is no one true religion, perhaps it hasn't been invented yet, in the same way that gravity or the atmosphere was unrecognized for centuries.

Juniorbush does nor want to irritate his Saudi pals by saying that Islam is NOT a 'religion of peace'. Most Muslims are peaceful most of the time, after all. as are most Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, T'aoists, Shintoes, Jains, Bahai'is and Sikhs. No religion wants to be known as a terrorist cult, of course.

McCain should do whatever tickles his fancy. If he continues using the term 'Islamic Terrorists", there are many who will not vote for him, and no doubt many who will.

The 'truth' is not the important thing in a campaign. Votes are pretty much everything.

What a concept.

Truth matters to me , I want my vote to depend a lot on it.

>>Is this a polite fiction?<<

I believe so. Of course that means I'm evil.

So if Obama or Hillary also were to denounce 'Islamic terrorists', you might be really confused?

Obviously, the 9-11 terrorists were both terrorists and Islamic. We could argue as to whether they were proper Islamists, since some were apparently frequenting titty bars and drinking booze (which proper Muslims don't do), but they certainly called themselves Islamic and claimed that they were terrorizing in the name of Islam.

On the other hand, most Muslims are NOT terrorists, and spend their time working and shopping at the Mall and doing all the things that you might do, other than attending a mosque on Fridays and not a Church on Sundays.

So it is true that there were (and probably still are) Islamic terrorists, but it is also true that not even most Muslims are into terrorism.

Anyone with half a brain recognizes this, and can vote in accordance with however they perceive the world.

It is pretty certain that neither Hillary nor Obama will offer any support to anyone, Muslim or otherwise, planning to blow up Americans in some act of terrorism.

As for your vote depending 'a lot' on this 'truth', either it will be enough to sway your vote entirely, or not enough. You  cannot vote 83% for McCain and 17% for Obama, for example.

Useing your example I can approve of McCain's platform 80% , Obamas platform 17% Hillarys platform 30% and choose the canadate that has the preponderance of my approval.

Which one respects my intelligence , my right to know the truth , seems to be manipulateing the truth to appear "truthy " which ones seem to lie for no good reason  , things like that do affect the approval I allow for a canadate.

The KKK would like to be known as a Christian organisation , they really would .

They don't get a lot of support for this from Christians generally , who mostly don't condone or excuse the tipical KKK activity.

Is Al Quieda's relationship to the rest of Islam like this?

I'd argue very much so, Plane.  It's why I had to keep referencing for Prince that Militant Islam is to Islam as Christian Nationalism was to Christianity.  At least if that had been made clear by messers Js and/or Prince, the criticisms following that other thread would have been largely non-existant
