Sarkozy urged the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia to stop "this absurd and medieval conflict" with the Colombian government. He said France was ready to offer asylum to FARC fighters who renounce violence.

Leaders across the world welcomed the news of Betancourt's release and called on the FARC to release the remaining hostages, believed to number around 700.

I guess FARC was afraid of what would happen to them if they made the French mad, considering the French Army opened fire on their own people a couple of days ago.

They are not afraid of all the nasty critters that live in the jungle, of which there are many.
Most of them are not even afraid of chupacabras, the number thirteen or clowns.

They take hostages to extort money. That does not make them cowards. It makes them immoral.
Cowardice and immorality are different concepts.
