I don't think, plane, that you got my point. It wasn't that the Republicans invented slime.
The point of my post was not that politicians slime one another. That's a given. The point of the post was that a line had been crossed. Given the general reverence accorded to the military in U.S. society, an attack on a military man's martial valour is a more serious thing than an attack on a man's marital fidelity.
In fact plenty of politicians have been accused of screwing around, stealing money, taking bribes, etc.
Attacking the medals of a veteran wounded in the service of his country, I contended, was a new low, at least in recent (20th Century to present) American history.
Oh , well I see your point then. Such an accusation would not be accepted from me or you , the problem Kerry had was that the accusation came from the Swift Boat Veterans that were his comrades .
Generals and War heroes have run for President before , did you think they had no opposition?
Saying nasty things about a candidates children has even been done before , but it is not very likely to be productive , Common people commonly have a sense of common decency and an attack on a helpless child like this is not going to go over well.
Grover Cleveland got elected anyway even though he admitted to being the father of an illegitimate child he simply reveled all the pertant details himself and this defused the situation a lot.
Accusing the Governor of Alaska of covering for a daughters illegitimate pregnancy seems grossly inappropriate and mean , just what I would wish for them to seem like.
