Who knew the Grinch was an associate provost?

I never would have guessed it

UNC libraries to forgo Christmas trees
Chapel Hill library chief says staffers complained about the display.
By Eric Ferreri

CHAPEL HILL For as long as anyone can remember, Christmas trees adorned with lights and ornaments have greeted holiday season visitors to UNC Chapel Hill's two main libraries.

Not this year.

The trees, which have stood in the lobby areas of Wilson and Davis libraries each December, were kept in storage this year at the behest of Sarah Michalak, the associate provost for university libraries.

Michalak's decision followed several years of queries and complaints from library employees and patrons bothered by the Christian display, Michalak said this week.

Michalak said that banishing the Christmas displays was not an easy decision but that she asked around to library colleagues at Duke, N.C. State and elsewhere and found no other one where Christmas trees were displayed.

Aside from the fact that a UNC Chapel Hill library is a public facility, Michalak said, libraries are places where information from all corners of the world and all belief systems is offered without judgment. Displaying one particular religion's symbols is antithetical to that philosophy, she said.

?We strive in our collection to have a wide variety of ideas,? she said. ?It doesn't seem right to celebrate one particular set of customs.?

Michalak, chief librarian for four years, said at least a dozen library employees have complained over the last few years about the display. She hasn't heard similar criticism from students, though they may have voiced concerns to other library staff.

Public libraries generally shy away from creating displays promoting any single religion, said Catherine Mau, deputy director of the Durham County library system, where poinsettias provided by a library booster group provide holiday cheer.

and don't forget that similar nonsense at FGCU.

Yet again, PC run amok.

Our Christian tradition is slowly ebbing away as people wander from the Truth.

Preople slowly lose their sense of Absolute Truth and devolve into relativism.

Predictable.

When I was in Mensa, we conducted a study that produced a definite link between intellect and a non-belief in God. Why the link? Becasue Man sets himself up as his own little god; forgetting he was created in His image, and to be in fellowship with Him.

Predictable.

forgetting he was created in His image, and to be in fellowship with Him.

=========================
People do not "forget" that man was created in God's "image": they have ceased to to believe it. It is a highly dubious proposition that must be taken entirely on faith from the Bible.

Think about it, using your powers of reasoning for a change.

God makes exactly two Biblical appearances in which his "image" is revealed: he appears to Moses as burning shrubbery. I know of no other humans that have ever appeared as a burning shrub. Perhaps you have, but you must admit that this is a rare image for any human to take. Flaming shrubs are not even in the running as Halloween costumes.

Then God appears not exactly as God, but as his offspring, born in human form, and not actually making a single mention of his part of the Christian image called the Trinity. When asked point-blank if he is the Messiah, Jesus does not answer directly, even once. He answers as a politician would, with questions and rejoinders, rather than clearly "yes". No one even asks, "Jesus, are you a part of a Holy Trinity?"

Would he have said "Let me get back to you on that?" We never know.

So, the only real bit in the Official Book of Christianity about how God and Man resemble one another is just limited to the Genesis tale, and in neither case is it clear in what ways God and Man are similar in image.

I see no problem of professors sticking Christian images paid for by themselves on their office doors, or having Nativity scenes paid for by individual employees in places like departmental offices.

I DO think it is a problem when taxpayers pay for displays of Nativity scenes, or even Santa and Rudolph, menorahs or Kwanzaa symbols on the campus lawn and illuminated with electricity paid for by the taxpayers.

This "war on Christmas" crap is greatly overblown. There are hundreds of problems that government needs to deal with of a higher priority than this. Personally, although I see clearly that my taxes paying for illuminated plastic Magi and livestock is a violation, it is not of sufficient importance to me to bother to protest. It is far less  unsettling to me than that ads where BeyoncĂ© appears with a huge gold "UPGRADE" bling in her mouth, and I don't protest that, either.

This natio was built on a Judeo-Christian foundation and that foundation is slowly slipping away for the sake of "diversity".

I doubt you deny that/ We only differ on whether it SHOULD slip away.

A problme exists in that there is no value system to take its place.

A manger scene is not a value system, nor did one single founding father have nativity statuary in mind when the Republic is founded, so stop being silly.

If the Ten Commandments is the basis of our value system, pray, tell us what the penalty is for coveting? How about blasphemy? Or maybe polytheism?

I deny that the Judeo Christian anything was ever or is or ever should be the basis for our legal syste, which is founded on English common law, Not Jesus, not Moses, and certainly not statuary.

You appear to be confounding statutes with statues.

societal mores are built upon a value system -- ours is our Judeo-Christian heritage, passed down from generation to generation.

Without our Christian Heritage and connection to England , the abolition of Slavery would have been unlikely for as long as it remained profitable.

In our Constitution the growing dissatisfaction with the institution of slavery is reflected in the compromises that were made between the anti and pro slavery representatives. In England the pro and anti slavery wrestle in Parlement continued till it was not only abolished in England and English territorys , but the English took on war to abolish the trade world wide.

And none of this would have been likely without a Christian tradition .
