vegans for health reasons?

absolutely!
One of the most common reasons for becoming a vegan are human health.
Of course there is debate about the vegan diet as there is with ALL diets.
And only a tiny tiny tiny fraction of the US population are vegans.

not sure that's a good idea

great...to each his own
some people dont think running is a good idea.....great dont run
some people dont think vitamins are a good idea....great dont take them

remember on record a very small percent of longlife people are vegans.
possibly none are vegans actually

MOST PEOPLE are not longlife people!

moderations seems to be the best option so far
a balanced diet with no excesses.

Well duh.....thats the old Zen saying
"All Know The Way....Few Walk It"

meaning no sizzlers buffet.

LOL....probably next on ObamaNazi hit list

but I would think about cutting down on gluten like kramer says.

yeah probably true

The vegetarian diet/longevity statistics were noted when comparing Seventh Day Adventists, who are vegetarians, with the general population.

Mormons (who do not drink, smoke or use caffeine) outlived the general population, on average.

Adventists (who do not drink or smoke) outlived Mormons, on average.

I imagine that other, more comprehensive studies have been done since.

There are a number of essential vitamins and minerals that a normal diet only provides via meat or dairy. People who drop both meat and dairy products (vegans) must either take supplements, or craft their diets very carefully. Vitamin D is one of these - you can only normally get vitamin D from meat products, though it is now added to some dairy products as well (some milks and cheeses made from those milks).

Your body will also produce enough vitamin D if you are exposed to a lot of sunlight (or for those living in more northerly climes, tanning beds), but this solution comes with it's own problems (skin cancer).

It is not difficult to take vitamin/mineral supplements.

Again, the statistics mention only averages: it is possible that if your father had been a vegetarian, he might have lived five or ten years longer. Or maybe not.

My father smoked until he was 75 and died at 86. His brother was an MD, who either never smoked or gave it in his 20's, and played eight holes of golf until he died of a broken hip, or more accurately, complications arising from that. He lived to be 99 years, 7 months old. There was an aunt who made at to 105. When she reached 98, she became convinced she was a child again, strangely.

It is not difficult to take vitamin/mineral supplements.

But some vegans will not because many of them use extractions from animals. There are lots of medical items that are extracted from animal products. When I was in the hospital recently, I told people who asked that the nurses were filling my IV with pig snot. The drug I was taking at the time (heparin) is extracted from the mucus of pig lungs (or from cow lungs for those who keep kosher/halal).

The healthiest diets are ones that include a wide variety of food - we evolved as omnivores, so we should eat lots of different stuff every day. In addition to plenty of fruits and vegetables, fish and dairy are healthy additions to a diet. You should also limit your intake of meat, especially red meat. This is my downfall - I eat too much red meat.

I just had all of that tested. Cholesterol normal, glucose normal (no diabetes), etc. Except for these pesky pulmonary embolisms, I'm healthy, even though I'm overweight.

diabetes
that`s one thing I not really worried about.

even though I have a sweet tooth, compared to most folks my intake is way low.

at most i`ll eat like a bar of candy a day

in fact I have trouble understanding how people can be munching that much candy in a day.

I`m talking about more than a handufl of candy in a day.

brrr
