Before I left the hospital, they asked me what pharmacy I used. I told them, and they sent the prescription to the pharmacy electronically. The prescription was filled and ready for me when I went through the pharmacy's drive through on the way home.

that was supposed to happen with my dad also
didn`t happen
the pharmacy said they didn`t got the call so I had to scramble and get the primary to get me the prescription.I get the big imppression hospitals in general just don`t understand how much of a problem it is to get medication  for thier patient after thier discharged.
I`ve asked this with my friends and they got the exact same problems.
this was the 1st subject brought up  by my dad`s hospice nurse.
ami you really really lucked out -

Maybe we just know how to run computer networks better in Minnesota. ;)

I've never had a problem. Doctor's office, hospital, whatever. They fill out the prescription info on the computer, it's sent electronically to my pharmacy, and I go there to pick it up. No paperwork, it's all electronic. Everything is digitized at capture, even lab results. Most of the equipment is designed to connect directly to the network to update everything, but even those few spots where it's not they have "bar type" scanner to capture the info (mostly when you're filling out the forms at the front desk and they need to capture your signature - they print the form, you sign it, they scan it in on the spot and the original is shredded). I even have an account, I can log on and view all of my medical records, charts, prescriptions, appointments (future and past), doctors notes, etc. From that account I can set up future appointments, email my doctor(s) (the emails get added to my medical records automatically), order drug refills if my prescription has refills on it, etc.
Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. (Benjamin Franklin)

that definately  one of the factors.

but not just for prescriptions.

I called 911 and the paramedic logged all my moms medications on his laptop.
but 5 hours later I had on the phone say what meds she took then the next day I had to fax that list of meds to the hospital pharmacist twice.

I tried e-mailing but the address was abit long so I had a couple of misspels which made me switch to verbal.
don`t understand why hospital don`t have a e-asy to write address just for this situation
my work address is setup that way.
