Will the Sunnis Explode over Hussein's Execution
« on: December 27, 2006, 03:52:13 PM »
Another wild card with the potential for widespread destruction has entered the scene in Iraq: the impending execution of Saddam Hussein. There is no stopping point for the deposed dictator's "dead man walking" march to the gallows: apparently there is no provision in Iraqi law for "clemency," that is, commutation of the sentence to life in prison. The die is cast, the dynamic will play out. But how will the news of the Sunnis' champion's death be received, and will we be ready for the backlash?

I assume that a significant portion of the Sunni population is enamored of Saddam. The question is the exact extent of that allegiance and fealty, and the powerful emotions they will generate upon his execution. In addition to preparing for an onslaught by insurgents, the Iraqi government would be well served fathoming whether and in what manner it can turn the event to its political advantage. Yet, like everything else in Iraq, it seems to be imponderable and unpredictable. Is there a chance to make Saddam's burnt offering carry symbolic meaning beyond its ability to inflame ... and vindicate? Is there the potential for a catharsis which would signal a dim hope for an arduous process of reconciliation?

As things go in Iraq, these matters won't even be addressed by the government, hunkered down and besieged. All that can be done is to send more troops into the streets, many of them American, to absorb and quell the increased violence that will follow the moment of vindication for those presently triumphant.

Past is prologue.

Did the Sunni's mount major offensives when Saddam was found guilty and sentenced or are they more concerned with securing their own future and to hell with Hussein?

There are any number of possible routes this could take.

The Sunnis could have moved on and SH will just hang and no one will care.

The Sunnis could mount some kind of mass demonstration to stop his execution and he won't be executed but live in prison.
The Sunnis could mount some kind of mass demonstration to stop his execution and he will be hanged and they will flip ass out and start killing anyone  they think had a hand in it (like our military).
The Sunnis could mount some kind of mass demonstration to stop his execution and he will be hanged and they will just shrug their collective shoulders and go to the house.

The Sunnis will not do or say anything till just minutes before SH is to be hanged and they will unleash hell trying to stop it.

The Sunnis have joined with Shias and Kurds who also found SH preferable to the US occupation and now want to join together in a spirit of Iraqi patriotism and drive the infidel occupiers out of their country, hang their puppets' mutilated bodies from lampposts across Baghdad and free Saddam to once again be their elected king while helicopters struggle to take off from the roof of the US embassy

Any of these could happen and we would never know depending on how the media is instructed to talk about it by BushCo.

The possibilities are limitless really.

The Sunnis could get themselves all killed.

The possibilitys don't include a merger with Kurds and Shia protesting the fate of Saddam.

All killed?  ALL killed? That would be several million men, women and children. Not bloody likely. Impossible, really.

I think that most Iraqis are sick of Saddam and little will happen when he is hanged, assuming that this actually happens.
Only the most die hard of sectarian Sunnis MIGHT stage a protest.

I was replying to Brassmasks assertion that the possibilitys are infinate , I do not think that the possibilitys are infinate either.
