Daniels Signs Voucher Bill

By Gabe Bullard

May 5, 2011

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has signed the nation's most sweeping
private school voucher program into law.

The program directs taxpayer money to private and religious schools. It's based
on a sliding income scale. Families of four that make more than $60,000 will qualify
for a scholarship if they move from public to private schools.

Critics say the plan will spread education funds too thin and give federal money to
religious schools.

In addition to signing the voucher bill, Daniels also signed legislation aimed at expanded
charter schools, which are publicly funded but free of many state regulations.

Charter schools are not necessarily better. Some here in Miami have been real disasters.

Freeing them from state supervision is not going to improve education. Eliminating standards is not the same as setting higher standards.

Nothing in life is 100%

It's all about being open-minded and willing to try different
approaches when what you are doing isn't working.
The way we educate our children isnt working very well.
It's time to try new things.
For the children.

It's like my brother today needed a new driver's license.
Everyone dreads when they have to actually go into the DL office.
Because of course the line can be 1-3 hours...typical gvt bullshit...no competition=shit service
And yes part of that is caused by the illegal invaders.
So I said "why doesn't the state give part of this to private companies
and let there be 100 places to get a new DL instead of like 5"?
Obviously whats being done now isnt working.
So try something else.
Be fleet footed.....not entrenched....making excuses.

Great way to cut costs, after all public schools are producing morons at top dollar. If you are gong to make a moron you might just as well do it for 1/2 the price!

Yo, C....I got wind of some discouraging news.  From the tid-bits I've been hearing, it seems that the left, the MSM, and Obama actually want Daniels to be the front runner.  That gives me great pause.

Did I hear he was looking to drop medicare as a campaign issue, and look to "compromise" with the left in order to move legislation??  I think I heard some pundits claim how Daniels seems to be the only "serious" choice the GOP could provide, becuse he could get Government running again with some "tough decisions".  I think though that their version of "tough decisions" is pretty much in ignoring the tea party movement, and the folks that elected leaders to actually make the tough decisions in bringing down out-of-control Government spending

Is Daniels a moderate in conservative clothing??  I guess time will tell.  If Xo actually starts saying how good a candidate he is (though "obviously" Obama would beat him in an election) , then I guess I'll have my answer

SIRS.....i think Daniels may be more of a fiscal conservative
it seems i heard him say we must get our budget under control
before we crash and deal with other issues later

As i said, we shall see.  My concerns are how "giddy" the left seems to be with Daniels as a front runner

It is erroneous to say that American public education is not working. There are schools that are not doing what they should be doing, and there are others that are among the best in the world. Schools in the US are largely supported by district property taxes. The element that makes the biggest difference is the income of the parents: public schools in well-to-do neighborhoods are doing quiet well. On the other hand, those which are in impoverished neighborhoods produce poor results.

No one has a clue who the Hell this Daniels guy is or how his changes in schools will work. If the state gives scholarships to parents making $60K and over, that means that the kids with the poorer student bodies will likely be shortchanged.

You will not have time to decide whether his plan works between now and November 2012, because there will be no conclusive results,.

Rush Limbaugh apparently is not fond of Daniels either. Apparently Daniels said at CPAC that the GOP needs to reach out to more than the people who listen to Rush, Hannity, Beck or Ingraham.

Rush took offense to that .

But i agree with Daniels even though i like Kasich better than him. We need to get our fiscal house in order before we alienate voters with SoCon issues. In the meantime the churches can carry that ball.

No one that shares Rush's opinions is going to be elected president of this country. Rush caters to a fairly small minority of White, mostly male bigots, and there are not enough of them to elect a president.

Rush has a large listening audience. And what he does is mock liberals. And because he is mocking liberals, and most people do n ot like being associated with those who are mocked, his listeners gravitate to the conservative side even if they don't 100% agree with all Rush's positions.

Same thing happens with the left ( see SNL)  when they mock Palin. It isn't that they really believe her stupid, they just don't want to be associated with the uncool kids.

Rush seemed to be inserting himself into the election, at least in the part of the show i heard. And my thought was if he wants to demand purity he should run for office himself. Else let each candidate run their own campaigns and rise or fall with the electorate on their own. I don't recall ever giving Rush my proxy vote.
