Reading glasses are prescription glasses.

Not in my mind....but I guess it doesn't really matter.
A prescription is made availale to a patient by a doctor or medical professional.
The reading glasses I buy do not require a person to have a prescription.

If you go to an optometrist, he will hand you a prescription, which will say something like 1.75. If the prescription is identical for both eyes, all you need are glasses with this degree of magnification.

If you take this prescription to the store in the Mall, they will stick you for around $40 for the lens and up to $300 or more for the frames. The markup on frames is enormous. They will try to stick you for another $30 for some special scratch free coating and even more for UV protection. This is no more necessary than UV protection is necessary for people with 20-20 vision when they read in the park. UV protection is the opticians equivalent of "special paint glaze protection" and $100 pinstriping jobs car dealers like to stick the saps with.

If you take that same prescription to Walgreen's or Family dollar and buy reading glasses that say "1.75", you will have exactly the same degree of magnification.

I suggest that any corrective glasses that are bought according to a prescription are prescription glasses no matter where you bought them. The only difference is that you pay less, you don't have to wait, and if you lose your glasses, it is no big deal.

If you like fancy frames, check out your local Goodwill/ Salvation Army. Pop out the old lenses and have your optometrist install lenses to fit. That way you can get special titanium designer frames for maybe $5 instead of $300.

Like most medical services, profits are astronomical for glasses. Unlike other medical procedures, you can legally outwit  the system. You can use your head or you can be a sucker.

Thanks XO.
I break & lose so many that I have always bought reading glasses off the rack.
I'd be in the poor house if I went in for RX glasses.
Both my parents were optometrist, so they are probably not happy with me from heaven!
I buy them from lots of places....e-bay, grocery store, walmart, Walgreens, ect...
I also like some from ICU...but they are a bit pricey.

ps: i need to just have the damn lense replacement surgery...but I'm chicken.

glasses are cheaper than surgery. I did the math on glasses and even the doctor had to agree glasses are cheaper. but it`s real nice to see from both sides without turning your head and not flipping glasses for reading , seeing far and using the computer.

Try Singapore or South Africa for cheaper surgery.

I would never want anyone doing surgery on my eyes. That is just creepy.

This works if you need a little magnifacation, my prescription is more complex because the astigmatism is not the same all the way around.

No way I would do that to save a few bucks when it came to something as important as my eyes. I would want to be able to have routine follow-ups and be close to my doctor if a problem arose.

I would never want anyone doing surgery on my eyes. That is just creepy.

Lense replacement is actually quite routine and very popular these days.
Three people I work closely with have had it done with outstanding results.

Lens replacement may be routine and may be popular, but it is still creepy.
I would probably prefer it to blindness.
