For at least a little while , Georgia will have better gun law than Texas.

Ellijay, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a wide-ranging gun bill into law Wednesday that has critics howling and proponents applauding.

House Bill 60, or the Safe Carry Protection Act of 2014 -- which opponents have nicknamed the "guns everywhere bill" -- specifies where Georgia residents can carry weapons. Included are provisions that allow residents who have concealed carry permits to take guns into some bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports.

GeorgiaCarry, which lobbied for the bill, calls it "meaningful pro-gun legislation," despite it being watered down from the group's perspective. Still, the group has lauded the legislation, which will go into effect July 1. Americans for Responsible Solutions opposed the bill, calling it "extremism in action."

Under the bill, school districts would now be able, if they wanted, to allow some employees to carry a firearm under certain conditions. The bill also eliminates the fingerprinting requirement for renewing weapons carry licenses.

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, the legislation prohibits the state from creating and maintaining a database of licensed weapons carriers and repeals the state-required license for firearms dealers.

Colin Goddard, who survived the 2007 campus shooting at Virginia Tech, told Georgia Public Broadcasting he's alarmed by a provision that waives criminal prosecution of felons who use illegal firearms in the act of self-defense.

The bill may remain in the news as the Gov. Deal and his Democratic opponent, Jason Carter, go on campaigning until November. But that’s largely because Carter, a Democrat, voted for the Republican-backed measure, much to the chagrin of national Democrats who might consider pouring money into his campaign. Carter identifies himself as an “NRA Democrat.” And the National Rifle Association has endorsed both Carter and Deal in past elections.

There seems to be some sort of idiot race here. Who can suck up to the NRA the most?

When will we reach the ultimate stage, when the state government issues everyone a bazooka?

If used responsibly, Bazookas have to be a lot of fun.

I am at a loss as to how anyone could use a bazooka responsibly. It's like using napalm or mustard gas responsibly.

It is the same rule for small arms as for large ones.

Do the least harm.

Someone that doesn't understand this should not have a penknife.

How does anyone manage to do "the least harm" with a bazooka?

With the discipline required to fire at legitimate targets only.

There are no legitimate targets to fire a bazooka at, except in times of war.

It is not legitimate to fire a bazooka at a grizzly bear or a mountain lion.

That would indeed ruin the pelt.
