Net nutrality Cruz and Franken

It is a little hard to follow.

But I think that both Franken and Cruz are saying that new regulation as proposed would freeze the situation as it is .

But Al Franken thinks that is a good idea.

I am for net neutrality and against some companies hogging the lines with superspeed connections that most cannot afford.
I think the Internet should be a taxpayer supported nonprofit universal utility.

The Internet is a public utility.
It has the potential to educate this entire country, just as TV had, but now TV is mostly just used to sell crap.
There is no comparison between watching a good TV series without the commercials and when it is plagued with interruptions every ten minutes with ads.

Why do you want the internet given the same sort of oversight that radio and Television have had nearly a century.

Was that oversight really a success?

What about the internet makes this needful?

The educational wing of the Internet works quite well right now, those that want it to be part of their education are not complaining.

What does the government overseer offer us but stricture and orthodoxy?

No, I want it to have the same oversight that the water companies have.

TV are radio could have been far more informative and entertaining than they now are. There needs to be strict limits on the number of ads per hour that can be shown. Informercial channels should be repurposed to show something of value. They either sell overpriced schlock or peddle outright frauds.

The FCC doesn't do water, that is the EPA.

The proposal isn't to make the internet subject to the EPA is it?

More like making our internet more like our broadcast television.

Why is that good and why do we need it?

It would have to be more than just a little good to be worth the expense , trouble and loss of momentum.

I do not want the Internet to be more like broadcast TV. I did not say at any time that I wanted the FCC to supervise the Internet.
I do favor net neutrality. Broadband, however costs very little to provide, and the profit margin is huge. Therefore making it a public utility and available to everyone would serve the entire population with the opportunity to be educated.

Unless they change something , that is who would get it.

That is where the relevant experience is.

This is where we take the internet and cage it up.

The Internet is like the Interstate Highway System more than anything else. It should be as free and accessible as that, and for the same reasons.

Oh?

Who is maintaining the road in this metaphor?

The same entities that built them.

The origin of the internet were a project of the government and universities.

     Now it is everyone.

Trying to turn it into a government project would require a step backwards and some shrinkage.

I only believe that the Internet should be available at cost to all. The government should have an Internet Department perhaps a Secretary of Internet, hat also has a team of ombudsmen that will look after the interests of the public.  If this means that Comcast and ATT get their profits slashed, that is a GOOD thing.  They are incompetent and waste millions on stupid ads. Not one week goes by that I do not receive two letters from Comcast telling me about their stupid, deceitful plans. Not a day goes by that I do not see ads by ATT and Comcast about their plans. They never tell anyone what it really will cost after the promos run out.

All their advertising is a waste of money. I had to return postpaid envelopes to ATT ten times before they stopped calling me and mailing me promos. Comcast does not provide postpaid envelopes, but I have written them fie times about how I am not now,  will I ever be interested to no avail.
