I use the words "Chinese", "Taiwanese" and "Mainlander". They are more precise than "Asian" which could be anyone from Turkey to Borneo, Siberia to Sumatra.

I cannot say I have ever heard it used prejudicially. The Chinese people I know do not get into heated discussions about anything.

If it is like a Pavlovian response then no logical reason need be cited.

As Kimba points out anything that accompanied a punch in the face would become unwelcome because of the association.

Respect for people is generally a good idea. Even for Southerners.

Last time someone wrote a song for "Southern Man" it was not respectful.

I heard Neil Young sing about us
And I heard old Neil put us down
But I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern Man don't need him around anyhow...

Oh, yeah, Sweet Home, Alabama.
A great song, even if it is pro-George Corly Wallace, standing in the schoolhouse door.
"Segregation NOW, Segregation TOMORROW, Segregation FOREVAH!"
But not for all that long. As I recall, when the federal marshals came, he stepped aside.
Segregation never made it to tomorrow, at least not there.

Ol' George Wallace, brought low by yet another gun nut.

No Neil Young was necessary.

In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth...

Wallace may have been misguided, but he was at least honest about how he felt...even years later, when he admitted he had been wrong. Compare that to Nixon and his cronies. I never heard an admission that 'I am not a crook' was a lie.

You may not like the South, or our heritage, or history, or flag. Tough. No one is asking you to stay.

  Respect is the central question.

Do you have to disrespect crackers to respect Black people?

     I do not think so.
As a cracker in good standing I certify that no particular hatred of any person or group of persons is required for the  achievement of full crackerhood.

I do not think that offering respect only to people who are willing to change as required is a genuine offer of respect.
