That's actually not too far off.  From a medical standpoint, it's not so much an issue of a mental disease, such as schizophrenia.  Its more along a conscious psychological disposition.....a strong yearning, with no biological foundation.  It's no different than people who believe themselves to be gay, or have a longing for acts of B&D, or cross-dressing.  It's 100% psychological and 0% biological

What little I know about this is not very good for that group of folks. Shorter life span for various reasons and extremely low chance of a good life . This not to say curing them would help also since likely the trauma from it will have some very lasting effects.
