Presidential Discussion; Romney
« on: March 20, 2007, 03:46:04 AM »
Given the Professor's suggestion for conservatives to better look at this fella, I propose that when anyone wishes, to initiate a "Presidential Discussion", and just put in that particular candidate's name.  For those that wish, can then jump in with their pros and cons, suggestions & criticisms, and/or just your thoughts.

The Professor referenced:  "Well, check this site and see if it meets your conservative filter. It does mine"

Well, at 1st "glance", not too bad.  As a "partisan conservative", I have a couple of primary issues, and a few 2ndary issues, that I generally apply to any presidential candidate, (actually any candidate that I'm being asked to vote for).  I can fudge a fair amount on the 2ndary issues, but the primary ones get a tad more principled.  Currently those primary issues do not include Global Warming or how dangerous WalMart is becoming.  They also don't include how many are uninsured nor the optimal teacher/student ratio.

They do include the protection of this country while adhering to the Constitution, Immigration Reform (which translates into stronger enforcement of current immigration laws and punishing folks for wantingly hiring illegal immigrants over legal immigrants), and being Fiscally responsible (which basically means don't pay more than what you take in).  Of course we're talking about the Federal Government here, so fat chance of that last one happening.  The last time that happened, required a GOP led Congress to stop an out of control Liberal Democrat, back in the '90's.  Gads, what happened to that congress??  You would have thought that given the same congress with a GOP president, we really could have curbed out of control spending.  Who'd a thunk the opposite would have occurred.  It boggles the mind.

That all said, Romney looks great on taxes, energy independence, and his rhetoric regarding the threat of militant Islam is pretty bold.  However his positions on Education appear to hint that "more money" is needed, and his even vaguer on his immigration position.  More money for education is bad enough, when you consider how much we already spend per pupil in this country, but I need to see a much stronger (or more so, clearer) position on what he'd do regarding immigration, vs simply citing he wants more legal immigration and less illegal immigration.  Hell, if that's what he wants, just give amnesty to everyone and open the borders to anyone......whalaaa, more legal immigration & less illegal immigration.  No?   :-\
