Would the church frown upon it?
Well, doesn't it depend upon your view what "the church" is?
Fundamentalist and evangelical churches for sure would object, as probably the Catholic Church. The Unitarian-Universalist Church? Dunno.
However, this does bring up the issue of how religion can effectively deal with the progress of technology and/or the introduction of any alien races (okay go with me here) . As an example, I remember when heart transplants were first being performed, some church leaders rebelled saying it was not Scriptural and so on.
How will "the church" deal with cloning, for example? Does a clone have a soul? Can Replicators or even "I
m sorry for what I did" Wraith or sincere Minbari enter Heaven? What if brain transplants are performed in a few years time? Can THOSE people go to Heaven? Can they be priests, pastors, deacons, elders? And on and on...
