Toys "R" Us recalls China-made wood coloring cases

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Toys "R" Us Inc is recalling about 27,000 Imaginarium wooden coloring cases that were made in China because they violate federal lead paint standards.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall on Thursday, said the 213-piece coloring cases were sold at the toy retailer's stores and on its Web site from October 2006 through August 2007 for about $20.

The printed ink on the outer packaging of the wood case contains lead, and some of the black watercolor paint contains excessive levels of lead, the agency said.

It marks the latest in a string of recalls of Chinese-made products due to lead paint, including Mattel Inc's recent recall of Pixar Sarge die-cast toy cars, and Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer toys.

Lead paint has been linked to health problems in children, including brain damage.

The spate of recalls has sparked concern over the quality of products made in China, and the U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection will also hold a September 19 hearing on how to protect U.S. children from toys, jewelry and other imported products containing lead paint.

The CPSC said no injuries were reported from the Imaginarium coloring cases, and consumers should return them to Toys "R" Us for store credit.

Toys "R" Us is owned by a consortium that includes Bain Capital Partners LLC, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and Vornado Realty Trust.

Not a good time to be a child in love with Dora. My niece loves her. I noticed a similar coloring box at my sister's house the other night. Gosh, now I am going to have to check to see if it was made in China. I wonder if all toys made in China will soon be under the radar.........

Let's boycott ALL Chinese toys. It wouldn't take long for alternative sources to appear such as Thailand, Taiwan, etc.

Americans need to think less about themselves and more aobut what this is doing to our country. Selfish bastards! And this includes me when I get in this mode of erroneous thinking.

Oh, Jesus. On the count of 3, everybody grab their weenie and scream....

Look, if, as a parent, in your considered judgement a toy doesn't meet the standards that you think are appropriate for your child, THEN DON'T BUY IT!!!!

Either it's that simple, or Americans are. I'm beginning to wonder which one it is.....

Your remark is absolutely ridiculous. How does a parent gauge the lead content in paint?

They can go to amazon.com and order a simple lead test kit. These test kits have been available for years.

Do you think it's reasonable for every parent to use a lead test kits for every toy their child uses? Second, the comment I was responding to suggested that parents not buy a toy that doesn't meet their standards. Even if everyone had test kits, there really isn't a way to test a toy before you open the package.

Manufacturing standards are in place for a reason. I find it far more reasonable to hold the foreign manufacturers accountable to those standards.

And if it's unacceptable, you take it back. It actually costs them more that way. When my daughter was young and tended to put things in her mouth, I always had test kits around - not just for lead, either. Must be the chemist in me.
