Sept. 1-3, 2007 -- GOP will not be able to put Sen. Craig gay sex incident behind them
GOP spinmeisters are spreading the word that the GOP has better days ahead of it after Idaho's Republican Senator Larry Craig announced his plans to resign his seat on Sept. 30. However, the Washington rumor mill is rife with speculation that as many as three more GOP senators, including one holding a high leadership position, will soon be outed as gay. One of the senators is married while another divorced senator is now engaged to his former Senate staffer. The third senator is unmarried.
Two of the senators are from states with Republican governors, which means that any resignations will not result in a pickup of a seat for the Democrats.
However, in what could be very bad news for the Republicans, all three senators in question have adopted strongly anti-gay rights agendas and are currently sitting in seats not previously considered in play. Their outing may result in voter backlash handing the Democrats three seats not counted upon. Republicans face the possibility of losing open seats in Colorado and Virginia. The FBI investigation of Alaska's Ted Stevens could put his seat in play. South Dakota's Democratic incumbent, Tim Johnson, recovering from a stroke, is riding a wave of popularity, putting his seat out of the reach of a GOP pickup. The only vulnerable Democrat is Louisiana's Mary Landrieu, who will likely suffer from the depopulation of New Orleans of many of its African American voters in the wake of hurricane Katrina.
Other possible Democratic pickups are in Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Oregon. If the Democrats hold on to all of their seats, and pick up the Virginia and Colorado open seats and defeat GOP incumbents in the five states mentioned above, that gives them a net gain of seven seats, with a total of 58. If the outing of the three GOP senators occurs, that will give the Democrats a potential for 61 seats, with an added plum. One of the suspected gay Republican senators is running for re-election along with his GOP colleague in a rare occurrence. If a sex scandal results, the Democrats could grab the other seat, giving them 62 seats in the Senate or 61 if they eject "Independent Democrat" Joe Lieberman from their caucus.
In the case of one of the suspected senators, there is speculation that his military record was altered to reflect an honorable discharge, when, in fact, he may have been separated from the service for reasons of homosexual behavior. The senator in question has never brought attention to his short military enlistment and his record may have been cleaned up by two former Republican senators for whom he worked. The senator in question also poses a potential huge embarrassment for the Bush administration.
In addition, the Pamela Martin & Associates (PMA) scandal involving Louisiana Republican Senator David Vitter is far from over. A number of gay Republicans in Washington are upset that Craig was treated far more differently than Vitter, who admitted he procured the services of PMA female escorts. Vitter's peculiar sexual habits involving diapers, defecation, and spanking may also extend to other top Republican officials. There may be some further embarrassing disclosures in this scandal, which has already claimed Bush's US Agency for International Development director, Randall Tobias, as a victim.
