There are Indians wo don't get recognition as such and therefore don't get the leagal protection (such as it is) of a recognised tribe.

I fail to see why they approved of Indian gambling in the first place. Gambling is basically legalized theft, and it serves no one well.
At least they should require that everyone in the casino should be an Indian, if the idea is to benefit Indians.

The damage that casinos do is far greater than any good they could do.

Some of these tribes are willing to give up the rights to gambling but still can't be recognised.

I have nothing against the government recognizing legitimate Indian tribes.
They should have done this long ago.

Many Indians married Whites or Blacks long ago, and lost any tribal identity that they had. Other part Indians were adopted by Whites or Blacks as infants and lost their culture. There was a time when being an Indian or a 'half breed' was not acceptable, and many people concealed their identities.

More than half of the Choctaw nation vanished this way.
