It's the ship that launches the modern equivalents of the Higgins Boats - the LCAC. It also includes air support.

A ship carries boats.

On a scale of one to ten, how strong does this ship make you feel?

How inspired?

I feel pretty damn good about the symbolism of taking something horrible and making it into something useful for fighting against the evil that brought it down in the first place.  Of course I am one of these fools that gets inspired by things like the Statue of Liberty, the national anthem and the flag.  Oh crap.  I went and shot my credibility again by using the F word.  Gotta watch your language these days.

Does not the creation of this ship not strike you as some sort of rather silly symbolism?

I am not sure how useful and amphibious assault ship might be in a desert country like Iraq or Afghanistan. Afghanistan is probably too dry to assault any Afghanis amphibiously. Iraq barely has a coast. Perhaps it could fit in a large river, like the Tigris or Euphrates.

No.  But being proud of military tradition and understanding the symbolism makes it ring more true with me than it obviously does with you.  In fact, since I am also familiar with amphibious operations and the importance of amphibious transport in the region of the Persian Gulf,  I think it is a quite useful vessel.  I can imagine it would be an incredible honor to serve on such a ship.  We military types have a respect for such things.

I am glad we still have the manufacturing strength to build ships and i am inspired that it was built from recyclables.
