Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama

WASHINGTON (AP)

A new poll suggests racism could affect the outcome of this year's presidential election.

An AP-Yahoo News poll finds that one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks.
Many whites call blacks "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race
could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 -- about 2.5%age points.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests 40% of all white Americans hold at least a partly
negative view toward blacks.

Stanford political scientist Paul Sniderman, who helped analyze the survey, summed it up by saying,
"There are a lot fewer bigots than there were 50 years ago, but that doesn't mean there's only a few bigots."

So if 40% of white Americans harbour negative views about blacks, but only a third of white Democrats do, that means the rest of the country, independents and Republicans, must have much more than a 40% racist POV in order to pull the national average up to 40%.  Keep in mind there are many more Democrats than Republicans.  So the relatively small numbers of Republicans and independents must have a really BIG percentage of white racist votes.

Dare I to speculate that the rate of anti-black racist feeling among white Republicans is about TWICE or more what it is among white Democrats?  It's only common sense, flowing from the conception and application of the Southern Strategy that of course the Republicans are the party of white racism and now these stats seem to bear that out.

Thank you, CU4, for proving what I and everyone else always knew about racism in the Republican Party.

Ok 32%  of white Republicans can describe black people as freindly ,
38% of white Democrats.

Sure it isn't those wild independants that are  throwing off the curve?

The spread on every question is less than 10%.

plane i know a life-long democrat that lives in Vegas
he was a strong supporter of Hillary
i spoke with him recently and his exact words were
"I'm not votin for no nigger"
i said "David, but you agree with Obama's positions on the issues"
he would have none of it and said he would stay home on election day.
there are lots of racist democrats, racist liberals
they want all the "free stuff", but hate minorities
it makes me sick!

CU4, before you embarrass yourself any further, you should look at the graphed results of the poll, which plane was kind enough to post here (the third post up from this one) - - because it CLEARLY shows that in every POSITIVE feeling or belief about blacks, the Democrats are substantially ahead of the Republicans, and in every NEGATIVE feeling or belief about blacks, the Republicans are substantially ahead of the Democrats.  Usually with a 10% difference.

More or less as I originally postulated, except with a lower margin of difference.

If either Obama or McCain wins by 10%, there will be some who call it a landslide. Of course 10% is meaningful.

i hold some negative views of blacks
just like most blacks probably hold "negative views" about whites
i would vote for a black for president without hesitation
in reality "negative views" does not equate to racism
but it's still funny to see the "high horses" exposed!

The survey defines the positives and negatives much more specifically than positive and negative views. Look at the survey. Know what you are talking about, it can't hurt.

i stated "FULLY DEFINE"
i did not say they were not defined at all
but in your rush to judgement you fail to follow your own advice

    Jesse Jackson admitted to haveing negative feelings twards Blacks , as complex as the subject of racism can be , I think it a mistake to draw simple conclusions from events influenced so much by chaos.

     The Weather on the day of the election is liable to have a great effect on the elections outcome , if these surveyors estimate that the diffrence racism makes is 6% then whether it rains in contested states can make a greter diffrence than racism.


      The thing that makes the most diffrence of all to the final result is the distribution of the voters , this is why Mccain and Obama are much closer in the race for the popular vote than they are in the race for electorial votes.

If nothing changes from now Obama will win with greater than a 6% margin in electorial votes and in a dead heat in the popular vote.

It's not really a surprise, CU4.  The Democratic Party was hard-core racist for 100 years in the South, so it's no surprise to anyone that some of that ingrained racism remains.  Also since the American people generally are racist (40% according to the survey,) it would be expecting too much of any mass party such as the Democrats to be totally free of racism.  It would have to be totally unrepresentative of the American people, which no mass party can be.

I was surprised to find the number as high as a third, I would have guessed 20 to 25%.  I remember after the war, Stars & Stripes did a survey of GIs' attitudes regarding the Jews and the Nazis and somewhere between 20% and 25% of the GIs were of the belief that the Jews had somehow provoked the Nazis to genocide, i.e., that the Jews more or less had it coming.  At that time, I was surprised that the number wasn't higher.
