Burke's time as the commander for Destroyer Squadron 23 in the Pacific -- when he successfully led his sailors into battle at near boiler-bursting speeds -- earned him the nickname "31-Knot" Burke.
In 1955, Burke, then a rear admiral, became the most junior officer ever selected to become the Chief of Naval Operations, the Navy's top post. He stayed in the position for three terms until 1961 -- longer than anyone before or since -- overseeing the Navy during the Cold War when nuclear submarines were being added to U.S. fleets.
"In war, not force but determination brings victory," Burke said of American policy during the Cold War. "The United States cannot afford to be diffident in the use of its powers because this is more than a fight for real estate. This is a fight for American principles."
