Robert Owen, an industrialist and a socialist, instituted voluntarily long before the unions successfully demanded it. By almost 110 years for US workers.

-=================================
At New Lanark, and only there, and only for a few years. The unions were the ones who brought the 40 hour week to this country.

The IDEA is not nearly as important as the implementation of the idea.

The first man who looked at a bird and said "I'd like to fly" was not as great an aviation pioneer as the Wright brothers, Montgolfier or Santos-Dumont.

I fail to see why an industrialist cannot be a Socialist. Go to Wal*Mart, and you will see nothing but mass produced items from a Communist country. Socialism is a system of government. Industrialism is a method of production. They are not mutually exclusive.

As well as a capitalist.

And it seems that one man with one idea was more effective than your union heroes, because when he found resistance from the other owners he simply bought them out and then implemented the programs.
