Either the Americans want him or they don't.  If they don't want him, he'll be out regardless of whether he blew off the date or not.  If they need him, won't make any difference in the long run.  Blowing off the date was just posturing.

More interesting question is how wise is he to accept a position at the head of the puppet government.  He's probably forgotten all about poor Najibullah.

No, of course not.  People can always surprise you.  Nothing I've seen so far of Bush or Maliki changes my opinion of either of them but that's not to say neither one is capable of surprising me.

Ditto "anything that actually happens."  If Maliki and his government were to convert to Judaism tomorrow and join their army to the IDF, THAT would surprise me.
