I like the Reagan Library idea too. Never been there.

My wife and I are planning a vaca in the southern CA area early next year (January, early February, something like that).

Recommendations?

She wants to be close enough to LA to go to a taping of the Craig Ferguson show, but that's about our only limitation, other than being in an area where I can trade our timeshare into.

Not a big fan of the LA area, though that is the southern CA mecha for activity.  Universal Studio tours is a big highlight of the area.  I can't speak for the best places to eat since, again, I don't frequent the area enough.  BUT, if you 2 like prime rib, you can't be a night at Lowrys.  BEST prime rib you'll ever taste.  I think staying in the Northern/Northwest areas of LA is likely safer and more interesting.  Avoid South & East, if you can.  I hear great things about the Reagan Library, up in the far western portion of Simi Valley, which isn't that far from LA.

There is so much to see from San Diego to LA it's going to be hard for you to narrow down your options. Depends on where your interests lie. If I were you I would go in mid to late February over January. Feb is a great month to visit So Cal area where as early January still is a bit cooler than most would like.

The typical places are:
San Diego area in general
San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park
Sea World
Disneyland
Studio City
Hollywood
LA area in general

That's just a few but there is much much more.

I'm with you -- I avoid LA like the plague. Not that it isn't a great place for sightseeing and food.

Februrary can get a little bit on the wetside however.  That said, Kramer's right about everything else.  Oh, IF Zoo's are an interest, the San Diego Zoo is vastly superior to the LA Zoo.  Not to bring politics into it, but guess which one is run by a private organization, and which one is run by the City/Government    8)

Yes it can and does rain a bit in Feb, March April but early to mid month Feb would be fairly safe but really our average annual rain amounts to about 12 inches a year so it's not a big deal. These mid-westerners are pretty tough when it comes to weather condition.

A guy I work with who was an actor for awhile in LA keeps telling
me to try a diner out there called Roscoes Chicken-N-Waffles.
He said it's a real causal place..nothing fancy. Says he saw Shaq,
several LA Lakers, and Dodgers players in there often.

I saw a show on food joints on The Travel Channel and Roscoe's was one they highlighted. Looked really bad in a good way. Most of those places shown the food looks great and probably tastes great, and to go once or twice is OK but if you went regularly you would regret it, if you know what I mean.

ROFL

We'll be coming from Minnesota. Anything above about -15 at that time would be "warm".

there are nuances between months if you are sensitive enough to notice. I doubt they would bother you as I previously stated.
