Hastert 'glad' with House ethics committee findings

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, said Friday he is "glad" the House ethics committee found that the leadership broke no rules when handling the Foley mater.

The panel, however, did say the leadership's actions were negligent and that they failed to protect the teenage pages. "I am glad the Committee made clear that there was no violation of any House Rules by any Member or staff," Hastert said in a statement.

Hastert emphasized that the committee had confirmed that no House member or staffer knew about the more sexually explicit instant messages that later surfaced.

The report notes "the distinction between the emails and the instant messages is an important one, because the emails do not contain the graphic or explicit sexual content of the instant messages." (Page 74)
