About 100 men who have been cleared for release and are awaiting transfer to another country are among more than 400 currently being held at Guantanamo.

Many are likely to face mistreatment or torture at the hands of their own governments if they return home.

Under international law, the US cannot return them to a country where they will be tortured.

Human Rights Watch has suggested that a third country should step in to offer asylum.

Some 335 prisoners have been transferred out of Guantanamo since the prison camp's creation in January 2002 and another 110 of the 450 still at the jail have been declared eligible for transfer or release, the Pentagon said.

Who wants these guys?

We are talking about 100 guys that our government have taken to Guntanimo but then decided were no threat , but we can't send them to where we picked them up for one reason or another.

Will we wind up accepting them ourselves?

That would have to be the most indirect means to become an American .
