Assad, unlike Mussolini was not a sworn enemy of democratic regimes

That is debatable. Lebanon and Iraq both have democratically elected goverments and Assad has meddled with both.

"Syria does not fire upon Israelis"

Does Syria do anything to make it difficult for Hezbolla to fire on Israsel?

I think a respect for Israeli  firepower explains Syrian penchant for fighting via proxy.

Why would you think this?  Is he doing anything to democratize Syria?

I would say this because Mussolini swore to destroy democratic regimes, and Assad has not so sworn.

It is one thing not to like turkey hash and quite another to threaten to kill all who eat it.
Surely a clever fellow such as yourself can tell the difference.

Italy had a rather large population in 1941, and a serious army.
Syria is smaller and its army has never covered itself in glory.

The Italians in 1935 were not haveing to deal with the USA.

But the way that Syria deals with Lebanon would not be out of the relm of Mousoulini's modes of behavior.

What is said has importance but actions are more important for determineing the truth.

In Syria democracy is not growing and in Lebanon democracy is being strangled.
