Nothing symbolic about it.  It's called reality.  It's called financial responsibility.  It's called living within one's means.  Hardly symbolic.  In fact it's largely a concrete polar opposite

That said, it appears the GOP has made strike 1 in their effort bring back fiscal responsibility.  Let's hope their efforts to compromise, don't effect them too badly politically

Just watch and see. Enough Republicans will vote on the increase in the debt ceiling, and it will pass.

If it does not, it will cost people a lot more money, because it will cause some sort of panic in the market, probably only temporarily. Blocking the increase is a stupid tea bagger trick, and it will ruin them forever if they shut down the government.

And Rand Paul and Ron Paul can go rob peter, for all I care.

I think that was already addressed in that they would, so your reporting it now, is no longer a "watch and see"

Exactly to whom is this symbolic message being sent?

The last time we almost had a balanced budget, Juniorbush used the money to bribe the voters to vote for him with his $300 rebate. After that, it was all downhill, with us fighting two wars with no increase in taxes.

The only message that could be sent is that we have a bunch of imbeciles in the government that would prefer to crash the market and extend the recovery period to the point of dysfunction.

But again, the debt ceiling will be raised, because not even a couple of doofi like McConnell and Boehner want to rerun the Gingrich Stupidity of 1994.

I agree that spending must be cut. I don't agree that defaulting is the best way to accomplish this goal.

yeah we gotta give the heroin addict just one mo hit or else he might have some nasty withdrawl symptoms
lets let him "kick the habit" tomorrow or next year or next decade
lets pretend reality doesn't exist....
put off the pain...
let the tooth rot now...deal with the root canal later
nobody has the balls to say "ENOUGH"! (i guarantee Chris Christie would have the balls!)
go ahead....fire up another hit!

So you would rather the US default on its debt?

BT I am not an economist and will be the first to admit
I dont have an answer for every question that is an
attempt to give the heroin addict another hit.
I am not sure default as you assume would actually happen.
I think that could be a smoke screen to get another hit of heroin.
You may think "default" is insanity,
but what we are doing is no less insane.
My trust would be in people like Ron Paul and
others like Peter Schiff that do not want to
continue this sham ponzi scheme that our
government in Washington is running.

OK R's will raise it if but only after the Balanced the Budget Amendment is signed. How do you like that one?

Depends on how the Balanced Budget Amendment reads.

The symbolic part is to force everyone who will vote for it to do so with a statement that justifys it.

This statement can be run in rebuttal to their reelection.

No one is going to pass any amendment of any sort soon, and if they did, it would dictate a balanced budget by some specified future date, which logically could not be before 2020 at the earliest.

I seriously doubt of they EVER will pass such an amendment.

I agree, that it why the Debt Limit should not be extended.
