I only say it works, i did not say it`s a good life. Everything has a price. Alot of the kids in my family are college grads, but only one is married. the ability to do hard work does not translate well in a relationship.

I have the feeling that the Tiger Mom was not actually the martinet that she claims to have been. What is most likely to happen when parents are too strict is that daughter runs away her sophomore year in HS with a tattooed guy on a motorcycle.

true case
she runs away and the moms calls the police that a kidnapping has occured. the mom will absolutely refuse to believe she`s hiding with relatives.

I think this women did a great job raising her daughter. I would not judge her mother in a bad way, on the contrary I applaud her. I doubt she cares much about what people think nor does she spend time judging others for the way they raise their kids. Clearly the state would not do such a fine job with any child.

Let us not forget that the girl was raised in Sin Fagcisco CA., not Kansas, so the mother had to be much more proactive in molding the girl into becoming a decent human being. Most kids going to public school in Sin Fagcisco are taught mostly crudeness. These kids graduate totally disadvantage and dysfunctional.

nah,it`s just a normal asian upbringing. being in san francisco would not hinder ,if anything it helps since  two of the top high schools in the city has the the highest percentage of asians students in them so the curve will always be high. it`s doubtful kansas will be helpful to those students.

lincoln high has one of the most advance biotech labs in the state.

this is getting dangerous
i agree with XO again
i think the thread title is wrong
it can work...but it also doesnt work many times
but like XO says....i've seen too much parental strictness backfire bigtime
i know lots of girls that married real young to escape over-bearing parents

it has backfired in funny ways.
many kids have married outside there race because of it . such transgression mean they will be released of all families obligations. which means the parents unknowingly reward thier kids for such an act.

All the study may of given the kids to knowledge of how to get out of those family duties.

San Fagcisco? Oh, how clever you are, Kramer.

It sure is refreshing to know that we have an expert here who understands the many obstacles that face young Chinese-American women growing up "totally disadvantage and dysfunctional" in San Francisco.

interesting about our differing perspectives.
kramer will only notice gays in sf.
he`ll only seer the negative

me a residents barely notice them at all.
I see the castro one of the most thriving and cleanest nieghborhood in the city
trendiest also.

except for pride days not exactly the most visible people.

strangeb how I hear more complaint about gays than gang violence

The impact of gays on teenagers is pretty much nil, except in some unusual circumstances. There are gay teens, but mostly, they associate with other gay teens. It is not like they give classes in Parental Disobedience ir How to Irritate Parents.

San Francisco is famous for Gays, cable cars and Rice-A-Roni, (the San Francisco treat). It is not noted for gang violence, every city has a bit of that.

Again, It seemed to me that the author of this Tiger Mom book did not tell everything, and would not have told everything even if that had been her goal. When it comes to dealing with your children, all sorts of things matter besides setting up rules of the house and such. Her goal was to sell lots of books, and to do that, she had to sound controversial, which is what gets you on Oprah and other talk shows where people go to hawk their books.

There is probably a lot of useful information in her book, and a lot of less than useful info as well. Her goal of getting her daughters into an Ivy League school was attained, but her much larger goal of selling a bazillion books, which will pay for the tuition and much, much more, was spectacularly attained. She is obviously a shrewd lady. Most Ivy League graduates probably do not make in twenty years what she earned from peddling that book.

The crucial element is that the Tiger mother actually CARED about her daughters.
Too many parents are strict, but basically want the kids to leave them alone and get lost.
The kids have to understand the WHY of the rules their parents set.
