Arizona governor vetoes birther, campus gun bills
By David Schwartz 2 hrs 10 mins ago

PHOENIX (Reuters) ? Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed two controversial bills, one mandating proof of U.S. citizenship to run for president, the other allowing guns on college campuses, in a clear setback for conservatives who control the state legislature.

Brewer, who grabbed headlines a year ago when she signed a get-tough state law cracking down on illegal immigrants, vetoed the bills in an announcement late on Monday.

The so-called "birther bill," would have made Arizona the first state in the nation to require presidential candidates prove U.S. citizenship by providing a long form birth certificate, and other forms of proof including baptismal or circumcision certificates, to be placed on the state ballot.

"I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their 'early baptism or circumcision certificates' ... This is a bridge too far," she said..

A former Arizona secretary of state, Brewer said she did not support designating one person as "gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate," as it "could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions."

The Republican-controlled state legislature passed the measure at a time when some foes of President Barack Obama, a Democrat question whether he is a native-born U.S. citizen. Real estate mogul and television reality show host Donald Trump is among those questioning Obama's birth in Hawaii.

the funny part is obama would still pass that

thier is a birth cert. just not the one some folks like. and nobody ever stated it`s not legal even

the wording on the bill did not disqualify obamas cert.

that might be why she rejected it. why do it if it doesn't disqualify the SOB.

Why do it? Because it's stupid? That might be a good reason right there.

I maybe wrong but doubtful all states may require the long form and still cannot disqualify other forms of birth cert.. due to the fact not everyone has the long form. pretty darn sure alot of state has digital only . the bill it`s self concedes this fact.

clearly most governments pass more stupid laws than smart laws. that's because typically corrupt people occupy political positions.

actually ,it might be calculated.

on the outside arizona seemed crazy, but to me it`s calculated.

the goal was to get more protection on thier border and they got it. the birther bill maybe to get more support and they are politically on good grounds with many other organizations.

yup, behind the scenes maneuvering. that doesn't make it so dumb after all. Anyway, what's dumb about a state making it's own laws regarding elections? if they want to see whether or not someone is a citizen that's fine with me. What is dumb about electing us citizens over aliens anytway?

as long as citizens don`t get deported it`s should be ok. but theirs no guarantee on that. the movie born in east L.A. not entirely fiction.

*NO* state requires the "long form" for anything and very few states actually keep the "long form" for any length of time.

i would like to know how easy it is to get a short form birth certificate
is it just two parents "swaring" and a notary?

because going forward with all the illegal mexicans this problem will
certainly arise again and again...and likely even more often.

we got millions of children that were brought over when
their law breaking non-american  papasitos brought them over
and if they were not born here should not be allowed to
be President (even if they are US Citizens) per the US Constitution.
