I always liked Columbo, as well as Peter Faulk.

Cu4 brings up an intriguing tangent.....at least for me.  There are some shows/movies I have no interest in watching, purely because the actor/actress/entertainer is some hardcore liberal activist, pushing their iedolgy via the pulpit of their celebrity.  And they can be extremely great performers, but they've tainted themselves, from my vantage, with using their celebrity position, to push an ideological agenda.

I have no problem with such folks pushing causes & charities.  Yet, even more impressive is the celebrity, like a Peter Falk, who just....does his job.  I never knew of his political leanings, which are obviously pretty liberal, given his apparent donations of support.  But he didn't let that fester into some agenda.  He simply did his job as an actor/entertainer......and he was great at it, and not only can I admire it, but look forward to seeing other performances of his, vs being turned off by some celebrity effort to be politically turned on, using their celebrity bully pulpit

As I said, you'll be missed Peter.  Can't say the same for the likes of a Sean Penn or a Danny Glover, when they are no longer with us

I like watching John Wayne films. What he did, he did well.

You don't have to be suicidal to like Van Gogh or an alcoholic to appreciate Pollock.

I don't actually appreciate Pollock all that much.

By and large, actors are MUCH better at their craft now than most actors of the 30's and 40's.The plots of many films are a lot better, and they are written better as well, for the most part.

Not that there are not some godawful dumb films still being made.

One thing you can usually count on with American films is that they are technically excellent. You never see a mike boom or a helicopter shadow when it does not belong. The sound quality is usually excellent.

A lot of those 1950's British films looked like they were filmed in a basement.
