One Pennsylvania restaurateur has pulled the car over and told the kids to just get out.

A local ABC affiliate reported that Mike Vuick, owner of McDain's in Monroeville, Pa., sent this email to his customers letting them know that kidlets would soon be non grata:

"Beginning July 16, 2011, McDain's Restaurant will no longer admit children under six years of age. We feel that McDain's is not a place for young children. Their volume can't be controlled and many, many times, they have disturbed other customers."

When there is a loud child in any enclosed space - restaurants, airplanes, chapels - two groups of people emerge. There are those with boundless love for small children - and boundless sympathy for parents - who will abide any amount of noise in the presence of those cherubic little faces. And then there are those who experience the equivalent of road rage when parents don't remove said loud child from said enclosed space. (These impasses can be particularly tense at 30,000 feet).

(MORE: Wondering If Children Are Necessary)

When interviewed, Vuick defended his position. "I think it's the height of being impolite and selfish," he said. "And therefore, I instituted a policy." He also delivered an "oh snap!" quip in response to angry parents: "You know, their child - maybe as it should be - is the center of their universe. But they don't realize it's not the center of the universe." And to clarify, McDain's touts itself as a destination for "cocktails and fine casual dining" that is adjacent to a golf course, so the restaurant may be used to older clientele.

Vuick is by no means the first person to issue a blanket ban on the kiddies. In the 1970s, one Florida city banned families with children under 14 from living in certain "adult community" parts of town; the city council even imposed a jail term and fine on anyone who sold or rented a house to such a family. In the 1980s, a Canadian human rights' commission said a ban similar to Vuick's did not violate the law; while a mother who was refused service felt she was discriminated against, the restaurant owner said "she and her husband were merely ending discrimination against customers who did not like to eat pasta while children whined and cried around them." And, in more recent years, the number of children banned from schools has even been on the rise in some parts of the world.

this was the norm in the 70`s, a unwritten rule. I don`t remember how it changed, pretty darn subtle how it changed.

childern are to be seen not heard was the expression.

I find it interesting that to you the "control freaks" are those who want to PREVENT people from controlling admission to places.

Let's have an all White, all Protestant cafe for people who prefer a nice White, Judenfrei environment. Oppose it and you are a liberal "control freak".

You live in a fantasy world! Clearly it's been substantiated that liberals are control freaks. From smoking to light-bulbs liberals want to control our every move and actions including our thermostats, the cars we drive, guns, money, and even the food we eat.

The areas they want no restriction on is drugs, and adults having sex with children. They also want to show unrestricted tits & ass and fowl language on TV at 8pm.

i think a good example how bad it is is the hanging pants, both parties took ten years to finally complain and tried to make a law to requitre teens to keep thier pants up. but due to the fact it took ten years to finally complain it never becam,e law. tens of hanging pants prettyy much means it was acceptable for tens years.

So you would controll the proprietors?

Do you suppose that such a pale coffee shop would make money?

I understand that in Berlin bars where one is free to smoke are thriving next to bars where smoking is prohibited.

Why shouldn't there be a place for people who are dead wrong to gather together in peace?

Note that I said nothing about banning people who ban others. I see nothing wrong about allowing people to smoke in bars, or preventing the admission of minors into bars.

But you are talking about allowing the owners of some restaurant to ban children from a restaurant. The obvious solution would be to simply seat customers with children in a section of the place where they would all be together and not disturb others, as used to be done with smokers.

Remember how they used to keep Blacks out of restaurants? Those signs that read "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone?"

Or perhaps you did not understand what that really meant. That was Ron Paul's schtick. Racism disguised as the civil right to discriminate.

Precisely. I find cigar smoke in a restaurant annoying, but screaming babies more so.

It is worse on a plane when you get seated next to a screaming child. They should seat them in their own section. When their ears pop, they feel uncomfortable, and they invariably scream. At least in a restaurant, you can move. On a plane, you are stuck in a Smurf-sized seat. I believe that screaming babies were used in Iraq as a form of torture by Rumsfeld's brave sickos.

This is what I'm talking about -- YOU want to control this restaurant owner by making up your rules for him to follow. Why the hell can't he ban kids just like HE wants to do? You frigging control freak liberal garbage! BTW, sounds like you are OK with the restaurant owner stashing the kids at the back of the bus, so to speak. Maybe he should make them use separate bathrooms and drink from 'kids' only water fountains too!

Why? they do not disturb other diners in the bathrooms.

Restaurants only occasionally have drinking fountains, but people using drinking fountains are normally quiet.

The solution is to put the kids somewhere where they are not a disturbance. You want to shut them out completely.

Why don't you buy your own restaurant and run the way you want and let this person runs theirs the way they want, and keep your ideas & opinions to yourself? And if nobody wants to go to either of your restaurants then so be it. Your problem, and other liberals like you, is that you are overly concerned about matters that aren't any of your business. MYOB!
