"White men make up less than 50 percent of the U.S. population. We're drawing (future scientists) from less than 50 percent of the talent we have available," says Mae Jemison, the first black woman astronaut, who has a medical degree and a bachelor's in chemical engineering.



"The more people you have in STEM," she says, "the more innovations you'll get."

Jemison says the problem begins for children of all backgrounds in grade school, where they are usually asked to memorize facts out of a book instead of satisfying their natural curiosity through experiments and exploring. She also says many primary school science teachers took little science in college.

Allen Gordon has been teaching math in Oakland, Calif., for seven years. He always tries to apply real-word situations to his lessons — coupons, compound interest on bank accounts, album sales.

"If math and science seem boring and of no use on a primary education level, who would want to pursue it while in college?" he says. "Especially when you don't see many, if any, black men or women teaching."

"Math and science are not something that black men and women sit around and pontificate about at home, dinner parties, the sports bar, hair salon, et cetera," he says. "It doesn't fit into their social idea of status.

"Let's face it, there is no glory in saying, 'I teach math or science.' Career school teachers still seem to be very proletarian."

Even some of Gordon's fellow teachers ask how he can teach math, saying, "Funny, you don't look like the nerd type."

    There are steriotypes you don't mind fitting and there are some you do want to avoid.

There is a really good cartoon show for kids on PBS called "Sid, the Science Kid". The characters are a mixed race and gender bunch of what are second or maybe third graders and their teacher. All the kids are varying shades of orange and pink, but the features of Sid and the teacher seem to be Black. Each show gets into a question about some phenomenon, and there is an experiment to determine the facts. Then there are real kids and adults who get a bit deeper into the question.

why would a grown man watch a children's show?

I can answer that

because some of them are very well produced to be watched by all. i stumbled upon the dysney chanel and watched holes. I coulodn`t believe how good these kid themed movies are. I still like to see mr. rogers neighborhood these kids show are a great change of pace from the grownup stuff. but then i also watch an anime once in awhile .

I don`t watch all kids stuff, but I enjoy a total lack of sex & violence  in my old age.

How, for example, do the writers indicate that the children are of mixed origins without using any offensive stereotypes in drawing them or having them speak?

I an 69 years old and I can watch any bloody TV show I choose. I find watching some of these shows to be far more interesting than watching crap like American Idol or interminable commercials punctuated by grown men playing with balls and sticks.

Kramer is not the Boss of Me, nor should such a stunted mind be allowed to be judge or boss of any other human being on this planet.

I forgot as senior citizens continue to age they often times revert back to a childlike state. Do you get a senior deal on Depends?

I`m 46 and I got no problem buying depends and saying it publicly. walgreen has great sales on generic adult diapers. but I`m also very stocky,meaning very few people will say much in front of my face also.

it`s alot harder as adult to do then people think your fighting at least 40 years of conditioning to not do it in your car. we naturally try not do it. some people have the mistaken thinking you have infinate amount of time to hold it. my hands shake when I wait too long. personally i think it`s very rude for people to say wait. i belive earl of sandwich died from such custom of holding. in fact a lady died a few years ago from a radio game called hold your wee for a wii. she died but her kids got the wii

The only people Kramer would seem to really like are people exactly like Kramer, which number precisely zero.

I find it repulsive that this fool would tell me that because I commented on a clever and innovative children's show, somehow that means that I need to use Depends.

This is akin to saying that because he supports Cain, it means he has brain cancer and therefore might require treatment that would make all his hair fall out and need a wig. It is just sick and miserable.

I use this forum to observe all spectrum of opinion. I speak for all humanity that we are not as intelligent as we think we are. the smart move is for all folks here to mutually get along and still retain thier respective opinions.but like real life everyone is polarizing and refuse to do otherwise. I notice everyone refuses to acknowledge this and simply think the other is inferior.

I`m more labor than politics centered and  have real confirmation how bias employers are to the unemployed from this forum.
