Misleading headline?

NH Town Hall Audience Asked To Prove Citizenship At Rick Perry Event

MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBS) – People attending a Rick Perry event in Manchester, New Hampshire on Wednesday were asked if they were U.S. citizens.

Each reporter and attendee upon arrival at the Granite State Manufacturing building had their ID’s checked. The company handles defense contracts for the government.

Perhaps a more neutral headline could read:

Perry speaks at secured facility.

Hahahahaha!

I guess this would work at every facility secure enough to ask for ID at the gate.

Didn't their ID's indicate their nationality? It sounds like an accurate headline to me. People who are curious should read the whole article.

Does your driver's license have your nationality on it? Mine doesn't. Asking for ID is not the same as asking to prove they are citizens.

Many states will issue drivers licenses only to citizens and residents.

The article states they had to show their citizenship. Drivers licenses are not mentioned here.
It is not completely clear what sort of ID was required.

From another article:

"Nonetheless, according to [facilities manager] O'Hagan, NAFTA security policy requires that sub-tier government manufacturers have to send a company employee to accompany non-US citizens at all times."

So, it was a government regulation.

Those would be a passport, a birth certificate, or naturalization papers.

As i stated before people don't normally carry proof of citizenship. But if you think about it if drivers license is proof enough than thiers no need to ask for proof of citizenship. It's not legal anymore for americans to refuse showing id since 9-11

According to other reports, people were asked for id, and asked if they were US citizens. They were not asked for proof of citizenship. If anyone had indicated they were not US citizens, the person would have been assigned a company representative to stay with them while they toured the facility.

I fail to see what is wrong with the headline, or why it would matter to anyone.

No one was asked to PROVE their citizenship.

I was not there and do not know what anyone was asked to prove.

Arguing about a headline is just stupid. Anyone who has ever worked in journalism knows that headlines are written by someone other than those who wrote the article, and the intent is to attract attention and to fit the space available on the page, one column, two columns, three columns, etc.. It is more clear what happened if one reads this article. It is really of little concern of anyone was left out of a chance to hear Rick Perry speak.

It is like being denied a mug of corn nog, or a sardine-flavored pretzel.

Good thing that has nothing to do with the point of the thread, but so glad you cleared up that non-issue, as it relates to your non-presence    ::)
