Santorum Wins Mississippi and Alabama Primaries

Rick Santorum captured both Republican primaries in Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday, dealing a forceful rebuke to Mitt Romney’s hopes of demonstrating political strength in the South as he grinds toward his party’s nomination.

The failure by Mr. Romney to emerge as a victor in the three-way battle with Mr. Santorum and Newt Gingrich was underscored by his weakness with the Republican party’s traditional constituencies. Mr. Romney lost among very conservative voters and evangelical Christians, according to exit polls.

Mr. Gingrich appeared poised to come in second in both states Tuesday night, ahead of Mr. Romney but having failed to deliver any first-place victories in southern states outside of his home state of Georgia.

The immediate question for Mr. Gingrich will be whether pressure mounts for him to exit the race to allow conservatives to coalesce behind someone other than Mr. Romney.

Will Gingrich finally, at last, just shut up and crawl back under his rock now?

He is rather amusing, really. He reminds me of that Iraqi Press Secretary who told such amusing, fanciful lies for so long as the Iraqi Army was being routed.

Funny, how there seems to be no associated quotes referencing the title of the thread.  Perhaps a little disingenuousness is in play

This might depend a bit on whether Newt would prefer a President Santorum or a President Romney.

The second and third place contestants are splitting the vote of the people who do not prefer Romnney.

If Newt preferrs Romney he might remain in to split the opposition to Romney
If Newt is still a canadate for the rest of the race, coming in third every time,
this would help ensure a Romney victory.

Newt should call both camps and offer a Quid Pro Quo.

Offering to run more for Romney, offering to drop out for Santorum.

In trade this might not be worth the vice-presidency, perhaps an ambassidorship.

I think newt will lead a 60 day discussion up to the convention.

Indeed, by my theroy, better for Romney than a Newt Endorsement.

Romney seems to feel out of place in the south, he follows each quaint statement with a trite one.

Did he watch "GWTW" and "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof" in preparation?

Will choosing a popular southerner as veep be necessacery?

Newt slowly raises hand.

I am surprised Romney did as well as he did.

If Romney picks the Newtster as VP, we will know that he is a fool. Seriously, Newt would be a worse liability than Palin. Hell, he might even be dangerous to the life of the president.

If Romney picks the Newtster as VP...

He won't.  Nor would Newt accept such.

Honestly......at this point, not really.  Then again, I'm an optimist, so I'm kinda hoping some folks start to see the light perhaps.  Not asking for some conversion in ideology.  Just a hope for some level of objectivity, minus the focused hatred at a particular "group", be it the Catholic Church, "the rich", or Republicans, that pretty much blinds one to any facts and logic contrary to their preconceived idiocy

From a #'s stanpoint yea.  Still hasn't closed the deal, and if Newt stays committed to the race, Romney likely won't be able to garner a majority of the delegates.  Merely the most

But as I said, I'll wholeheartedely support whoever the choice is, given the "opponent", and the abyss he's pulling this country down into

Probably.  But as Bt referenced, Romney surprisingly held his own in the south

If Newt stays in it is because the old fart is on an ego trip. He stays in for the same reason someone else his age might buy a Porsche. He is 65, and a grandfather. After this, he might make money, but this is his last shot and he refuses to enter into geezerhood. He could care less about Romney or Santorum. he could care less for the country. He does not want to admit he is an annoying old geezer: he is no longer the "idea man", he is just an aging crackpot.
'
He is in denial.
Next comes anger, then bargaining (begging to be a VP candidate, perhaps?)

Then depression, and finally acceptance, which in the Newtster's case may be a postmortum experience.

He screwed up bigtime trying to impeach Clinton and shutting the government down. Now, it's payback time.

 ::)      Feel better now?

And FYI, he's not going to beg, nor accept a veep position.  There's a greater chance that Palin & Rice will jump into the race as Pres/Veep campaign platform
