Meet the Radical DOJ Lawyers Suing Sheriff Joe

Today the Eric Holder Justice Department sued Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  The civil rights lawsuit was filed by the notorious Civil Rights Division, headed by truth-challenged Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez.  Perez formerly headed the illegal alien advocacy organization Case de Maryland.  But the radicalism of the legal team aligned against Sheriff Joe does not end with Tom Perez.

Let's meet the radical Justice Department lawyers who drafted and filed this complaint.

Special Litigation Section Chief Jonathan Smith is already well known to PJ Media readers.

Smith replaces a section chief who was unwilling to serve as a lapdog to Perez and bring sketchy cases. Smith served 8 years as Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. Prior to his time at the Legal Aid Society, he served as Executive Director of the Public Justice Center. He also was Executive Director of the D.C. Prisoners Legal Services Project which served essentially as a law firm for prisoners against prisons and prison guards.

Also on the complaint are attorneys Winsome Gayle, Sergio Perez and Jennifer Mondino.  PJ Media exposed the radical backgrounds of these civil service attorneys, all hired after Obama's inauguration.  For example, Sergio Perez once worked for a group called the "Junta for Progressive Action."   Here's more from the Every Single One report on the Special Litigation Section.

Sergio Perez: Mr. Perez is another attorney fresh out of law school. As of the date this article was drafted, he continued to boast on his Facebook page of his active role in Junta for Progressive Action, an organization that promotes the rights of illegal aliens in the United States. From the group's website:

"Junta has worked with Unidad Latina to promote rights for the undocumented, encouraging [a Connecticut mayor] to issue a municipal identity card." Immigrant rights groups, such as Fair Haven-based Junta for Progressive Action, are working with the city's police department to establish a policy that would forbid police from asking about the legal status of immigrants who are crime victims or turning over any such information to federal immigration authorities.?

Sergio Perez
[Perez omitted helping this militant organization that aids lawbreakers from his resume.]  Mr. Perez also was the student director of Yale Law School's Legal Services for Immigrant Communities Clinic and the co-director of the school's Human Rights Project. He clerked one summer at a large law firm, but appears to have spent all of his time there working on a habeas corpus petition on behalf of a death-row inmate in Louisiana.

Upon arriving in the Civil Rights Division, Mr. Perez began working on the Special Litigation Section's investigation (or, as I have previously written at length, harassment) of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County (Ariz.) Detention Facility because of the Sheriff's participation in the federal 287(g) program.

Jennifer Mondino
Jennifer Mondino: After working at the Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion rights group, Ms. Mondino apparently decided that her work would be easier if she had the enforcement machinery of the Department of Justice behind her. She previously served as a staff attorney at the Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Law Project in Brooklyn and an attorney in the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General?s Office. On her resume, she proudly lists her volunteer activities with the Lawyers? Committee for Civil Rights Election Protection Campaign, the Legal Aid Society, the New York City Bar Refugee Assistance Project, the "Unite! Local 169 Fair Wages Campaign" (on behalf of Spanish-speaking green grocer employees), Bay Area Legal Aid, and Human Rights Watch. She also proudly touts her membership in the "National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights", whose website openly proclaims its real desire "to spread understanding of liberal ideas and advance progressive values."

Mondino also fought in court to facilitate abortions for sex selection in Oklahoma.

Winsome Gayle
Winsome Gayle: Ms. Gayle is a financial thoroughbred for the Democratic Party. FEC records reveal that she contributed nearly $5,600 to Obama in the 2008 campaign, and gave another $200 in 2009 to a very liberal (and ultimately unsuccessful) congressional Democratic candidate in Kansas, Raj Goyle. She worked as a staff attorney at the Public Defender's Service for the District of Columbia, interned at the ACLU in New York, and clerked for a liberal federal judge in Florida appointed by President Clinton.

During law school, Ms. Gayle was a member of the Harvard Civil Liberties Union, Harvard Law School Lambda, the Harvard Black Law Students Association, and the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. In fact, she continues to be the head of the Washington chapter of the Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus. She also wrote her undergraduate thesis on "Consensual Sodomy Laws: The Place of Morality in Law Where Justice is Concerned."

The reason these people are getting slammed here has nothing to do with the goonish behavior of Arpaio, and everything to do with other causes they have defended.

The message is that their suing Arpaio is bogus because of other things they have done in other circumstances unrelated to Arpaio.

Sheriff Arpaio's original plan was to make the prisoners as miserable as possible, with bad food, humiliating clothes dyed pink, and infernal living conditions. Thirty years ago he would probably have included torture as well.

He has accomplished his goal of (1) not spending extra money on building new jails and (2) making prisioners miserable.

Whether this has resulted in less crime is unclear. I assume that if the crime rate had dropped significantly as a direct result, there would be statistics and interviews with repentant prisoners to back this up. I have seen none.

This one is very interesting.This case against the Sheriff has been brought before, but rather than change anything the suit was resolved in a circle of mutual backscratching.

I think it is clear thet the Sheriff has the consent of the governed in his district, he is popular enough that attacking him is a political problem.

Ok , it is hard to apply a metric to what might have been.

Crime rises and falls due to many factors, so pulling the effect of harsher deterance out of the data is challenging.

I do note something obvious ,The Sheriff is successfull at pleasing the electoriate, I didn't know how large adn eager his Posse program is , thousands of unpaid volenteers under training and orders of the sheriff.

I think that there are enough questionable actions over the span of time to warrant a genuine investigation, especially instances of intimidation of press and political opponents. I don't think a genuine investigation is going to happen. I expect one side to instigate a whichhunt and another side to begin the process of cannonisation.

The real world concern is that the rights of prisoners should be protected with openess and oversight and the right of the public to expect genuine punishment of criminals should be honored in balance with good limits.

Unfortunately this is politically usefull and will be treated more as a football to move completely bto the end of the field rather than any attempt at balance.

Sheriff Arpaio created the Animal Crimes Investigations Unit over a decade ago and to this day, it remains one of the only units of its kind in existence inside a law enforcement agency.

The unit currently leads the way in enforcing animal cruelty laws, some of which are still in their infancy stages, and in doing so, is helping to create case law. The unit’s work also provides an example for other law enforcement agencies in this groundbreaking area. Sheriff Arpaio feels the work done by this unit is critical for a number of reasons not the least of which is this fact: there is a significant correlation between those individuals who perpetrate violent crimes against animals and those who eventually commit crimes against people.

Every year, the unit receives thousands of animal cruelty reports to the hotline Sheriff Arpaio established.

Specially trained detectives investigate every call. These investigations have resulted in the seizure of thousands of animals and produced hundreds of arrests since the unit’s inception.

The detectives are assisted by Sheriff’s posse personnel trained in animal cruelty investigations. Utilizing these posse members reduces response time and saves taxpayers money.

When an animal is seized from an abusive or neglectful owner, it is turned over to and cared for at our MASH (Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Safe Haven) unit. MASH utilizes an innovative program of supervised inmates to care for the animals, thus providing the inmates with animal care training and therapy.

During the history of this unit many notable investigations have resulted in arrest. These cases have received local, state, national, and even international attention. Some such investigations have included:

The successful felony prosecution of a celebrity who, until his run in with this Sheriff’s office, had eluded felony conviction for decades
Record single animal seizures in the hundreds (animals ranging from dogs, cats, and horses to reptiles and monkeys)
Mass arrest of 69 people for blood sport/animal fighting (cockfight)
Investigations resulting in long jail sentences for animal cruelty
Arrests for bestiality, dog fighting, cockfighting
Charges for associated crimes discovered during cruelty investigations included drug possession, child abuse, fraud, Booking single suspects for in excess of 100 felony animal cruelty counts
Many of these cases set precedence for being the first of their kind arrests
When probable cause is established in an animal cruelty investigation, the suspect is booked into Sheriff Arpaio’s Jail. Exceptions to this are only made in extenuating circumstances when the booking is not in the best interest of the community.

Sheriff Arpaio’s Animal Crimes Investigations Unit is constantly asked to consult with other law enforcement agencies throughout the nation which are seeking advice on how to properly conduct successful animal cruelty investigations. Arpaio’s unit is also asked to provide training to other agencies. The Animal Crimes Investigations Unit is proud to lead the way in this field and as such, has been the recipient of numerous accolades and awards.

It's not the sheriff since thier white,but the fact they get no services like better education or decent utility. Lets just say the government itself is not doing as good a job as the sheriff.
