I`d like a klingon bird of prey to be made, that might be more realistic goal.

They also had warp drive, transporters, and something like a phaser, not to mention a cloaking device, bad lighting and really uncomfortable furniture.

If this were for an amusement park, build both of them, and you could add Cardassian, Vulcan and Ferenghi vessels as well. Maybe even a Crystalline Entity.

If a spacecraft were built featuring a Nuclesr Reactor ,whether for power or propulsion, it might wind up looking like a Klingon ship because the cheapest way to sheild the crew from the radiation would be to mount it in a long stalk and keep the crew distant from the reactor most of the time.

Heavy sheilding is ,....heavy, you know?

In space, it is weightless.

That is the other thing that we need to invent: Di-Lithium reactors. They look like a cross between a condum and a Tesla Coil and go "Whoom! Whoom! Whoom!"

In orbit weight is easy to manage , but mass still counts.

A spacecraft that included a lot of rock or meatal for sheilding its reactor would require a lot of power to accellerate.

It might be a lot more convienient to put the radioactive stuff on the end of a stalk long enough to be equivelent to a lot of shielding, then collect a lot of reaction mass that the nuclear reactor can throw .

In Star Treck terms "Impulse Engines".

I don't recall Star Trek ever precisely mentioning nuclear power. I suppose that impulse engines might be something like that. I think the deal was that Warp Drive only worked at speeds faster than light. They were pretty vague about all the science on Star Trek, because it was mostly bogus

No one ever got irradiated on Star Trek. They were occasionally vaporized, turned into chunks of crumbly power and puddles of goo, as well as dark spots on the floor.

It was good science fiction, but fiction nonetheless.

What powered the Enterprise was an antimatter reaction.

Since then antimatter reactions have been accomplished , as a rare small scale event, it is still possible that antimatter could be developed into a shipboard powersorce.

What would you store antimatter in?

How does one go about finding, mining or creating antimatter? I imagine that would be even harder than storing it.

It's not like one can stroll down to the store and buy a pound of antimatter.

What do you make it with? positively charged electrons and negatively charged protons, and antineutrons, I assume.

All they ever were running out of was Dilithium crystals.

What makes Star Treck so delightfull is the effort expended to maintain plausability while fancy really takes flight.

An electron with a positive charge is a positron, a Proton with a negative charge is an antiproton.

The same atomic reactions that create positive matter creates just as well antimatter, it has been produced for decades , but keeping it from being eliminated almost instantly has been the trick.

It seems as if the creation of matter in the first place required the creation of equivelent antimatter at the same time , the trouble with this theroy is that we don't know where all that antimatter went.

I agree that Star Trek was entertaining, and it dealt with a lot of futuristic and philosophical issues in clever ways as well.

The Q Continuum was essentially a group of Olympian Gods. They were all-powerful from any human standpoint, and Q himself was the oddball black sheep of the Olympian family, whose main goal was not to get bored. Immortality was boring for his relatives, but even more so for him.

Lamentably, there is no warp drive, universal translator, phaser, tricorder or transporter yet and may never be.

the tricorder is being made as we speak
the rest is being research still
