Aren't folks supposed to divulge if they have any mental problems when going thru all the paperwork in purchasing a firearm?

====================================================
Yeah, sure, just like people are required to confess to whether they have ever taken anything without paying for it on job applications.

I have been known to take ALL the soap and shampoo when I leave a hotel room, for example.
When a cashier gives me too much change, and I tell her so, and she insists a second time that it is correct, I keep it.

When a pay phone rings and I know it is going to ask for more money, I do not answer it.

Who does?

No one is going to admit to being crazy if they know it will prevent them from buying something. No one.
There could easily be a database of people who have committed violent acts and then been diagnosed as mentally ill.
It is no more of a pain than taking your shoes off when you get on a plain.

For starters, they should:
Outlaw military rifles of the sort that people do not hunt with, especially semi automatic and automatic rifles, and anything that can be made automatic, such as kits.

Outlaw armor piercing bullets: deer do not wear armor.
Outlaw clips that hold more than ten bullets, or tax them very highly.
Limit gun buys to one per month, or better yet, one per year.
Tax ammunition, $10 per bullet.
Require background checks at gun shows.

Thanks for inspiring me to think about this: I will inform my rep and senators immediately.

I do not agree , obsolete military rifles are the poor mans wepon , outlawing them only cuts off the lower earner from having them, which I think is perverse.

Non problem, no one has been killed with armor peircing ammo in spite of a bullet proof vest since they were banned , also no one was ever killed with those things before they were banned, this is a case of not understanding the subject of discussion. Most of the wepons that are leagal to hunt deer with defeat most bullet proof vests .

Eh, small diffrence one way or the other.

Ok.

Absolutely reject this idea, it is another attack on the poor , only a lot of practice makes one a safe gun owner..

What would this do ? What would this change?

That is absolutely your right .

Why was the previous assault wepons ban a total flop?
It went on nearly ten years and didn't (as far as anyone knows) save one person anywhere from any injury at all.

So Xo no longer wants a Federal mental problem data base?  How are we going to keep the guns out of the insane now, if that's "the problem"?

=============================
That is PRECISELY what I advocate. In addition to the bans on military weaponry and very high taxes on ammo and the rest of it.

If that's what you advocate then is ANY mental problem goes on this Government database?  Fear of heights?  If treated and signed off by a physician do they come off this database?

In addition to the bans on military weaponry

Already illegal to own military assault weapons, without a special permit

and very high taxes on ammo and the rest of it.

Which again does nothing to prevent such criminals from performing their acts of murder, but does make it harder and harder for the law abiding.  Bravo, you've done precisely the opposite of what would address "the problem", as you claim

The more the ammo costs, the fewer of these will be available and the more they will cost. Affordability is clearly a way of preventing dangerous weapons from being owned and used.

The law-abiding can settle for hunting rifles.

The more the ammo costs means squat to the bad guy.  It does make it harder for the law abiding citizen however

-----------------------------------------------------
Fear of heights is not any sort of dangerous mental problem, and no one would advocate putting that in a database. Mental problems are well defined in a psychology manual.

A national database of potentially dangerous people is a great idea, but it should be drawn up and managed by mental health professionals, not the incompetent. For example, not you.

People who find rifles too expensive can buy crossbows and bows.

So, are you trying to imply I'd be on this database?  Think hard, on that answer.  Hint, it's what separates credible from irrational

If treated and signed off by a physician do they come off this database?

Didn't catch the answer to that one, yet

That's why we ask questions...so that the other person can clarify their stance.  Ball back in your court.  Will you choose credible or irrational

Insane people belong in the database.

Sane people do not.

How hard is that?

That wasn't the question now, was it.  Care to try again?
