Too bad this was a no gun zone. Someone with a gun might have saved them. Oh wait, it was a gun range, there were plenty of guns around. Gee, I wonder what went wrong?

'American Sniper' author Chris Kyle fatally shot at Texas gun range

By Gil Aegerter and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

A former Navy SEAL who wrote "American Sniper," a best-selling book about his lethal career as a marksman in Iraq, was shot to death with another man at a gun range near Stephenville, Texas, on Saturday.

Navy SEAL speaks out

Decorated former Navy SEAL marksman Chris Kyle, author of a new book about the super-secret military personnel who are assigned the most-dangerous missions, talks about some of the bloodiest battles of the war in Iraq.

Chris Kyle, 38, and the other man were found dead at the shooting range of Rough Creek Lodge on Saturday afternoon, Texas Highway Patrol spokesman Lonny Haschel told KXAS.

The gunman, identified as Eddie Ray Routh of Lancaster, Texas, was arrested after a brief pursuit, Trooper Haschel said. The other victim was named as Chad Littlefield, aged 35.

Kyle, a Texas native who grew up hunting, served four tours in Iraq with Navy SEAL Team 3. His shooting during battles in Ramadi and Fallujah became legendary, and insurgents nicknamed him the "Devil of Ramadi" and put a bounty on his head.

He was credited with 160 confirmed kills, including one in 2008 in which he said he fired from 2,100 yards away -- 1.2 miles.

The Star-Telegram described him as "America's deadliest sniper."

Haschel said Routh is believed to have shot the victims at around 3:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET) before leaving the shooting range and returning to his home in Lancaster in a Ford pickup truck.

The link between Routh and the two victims wasn't immediately clear, Haschel said. The Dallas Morning News reported that Routh was 25 years old and had military training.

Sounds like a straight out murder homicide to me. Maybe it was global warming that caused it.

More likely there is a woman involved.

*snicker*

But back to the point, was this a "massacre"?  I do believe the reference to gun free zones was the areas were nearly all these gun involved murders of more than 4 victims, occured.  Ummm, was there a mass shooting at this gun range??  The story seems to omit that pertinent piece of information to help support BsB's inferrence

ahh...irrational hyperbole.  You forgot to mention tank free zones or bazooka free zones.

I saw one report that says the shooter had PTSD. Wonder how they were able to get a firearm?

What is the ratio of mass killings in gun free zones vs gun shows and gun ranges?

The anti gun people really need to shoot a lot of gun nuts to catch up.

The anti gun people are not into "catching up" with gun nuts by shooting anyone.

In this case one crazy gun nut shot a sane gun nut.

The only thing that will stop an armed sane gun nut is a crazy gun nut. This was a demonstration of a corollary to La Pierre's Theorum for the mentally challenged. No anti-gun people were involved in the demonstration.

There is not any sort of shooting competition involved between anti-gun people and gun nuts. Anti gun people do not wish to see anyone shot.

So what law would have helped in this situation?

A law that prevented the shooter from owning a gun or shooting a gun  because he was nuts would be the obvious answer.

The shooter was being treated for PTSD. Should he have been listed in a national health database that is shared with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System?

How does that work in relation to HIPPA laws?
