The shooter was being treated for PTSD. Should he have been listed in a national health database that is shared with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System?

He should have been prevented from owning and shooting any firearm

How does that work in relation to HIPPA laws?

I do not know, but he should never been allowed to own that gun, shoot it or to buy ammo for it.

Don't you think the optics of denying a veteran who was perfectly capable of carrying automatic weapons in some far off land would not be allowed to carry firearms when they get home?

I think the optics on that just don't look too good.

Why would a returning soldier showing symptoms of PTSD even seek help if they are placed in the system as suffering from a mental disorder and therefore denied a fundamental right?

Oh, I don't know.... Perhaps to prevent him from blowing the brains out of others?

Shooting a gun should not be a fundamental right, because it is fundamentally stupid.

Again, the Swiss have managed lots of their citizens owning guns quite well. We should follow their lead as well as we can.

I don't recall saying shooting a gun was a fundamental right.

Owning one is.

A law that prevented the shooter from owning a gun or shooting a gun  because he was nuts would be the obvious answer.

The shooter was being treated for PTSD. Should he have been listed in a national health database that is shared with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System?

How does that work in relation to HIPPA laws?

I understand that a bunch of states do not report .

Is PTSD reportable in the first place? I don't think it necessacerily results in violent behavior.

That is an interesting distinction.
The second amendment does phrase , to make that distinction I suppose.

Is there a right to develop proficiency?
That might be a good job for the Milita.

I think the shooting of a gun can be much more regulated than the owning of a gun because the constitution does not address the shooting of those weapons per se.

How many towns have laws against discharging firearms within the city limits.

In this case one crazy gun nut shot a sane gun nut.

Sane gun nut??  Isn't that an oxymoron?  Or just a nice truthful window into the mind of a hard core liberal who sees anyone that dares to exercise the 2nd amendment right, as a "gun nut"

I am not so sure that accompanying a troubled guy with PTSD to a gun range is entirely sane.

Shooting the guy was clearly far less sane.

These events are clearly not the actions of a WELL REGULATED MILITIA.

More like a lethal version of something involving Moe, Shemp and Larry.

With pies rather than firearms it might have been great youtubery.

Should a returning vet who has been diagnosed with PTSD be allowed to own a firearm? That depends on a whole host of things mostly particular to the specific vet and his stability or lack there of. You can't make sweeping generalities. It's a very tough call.

People who are likely to shoot other people should not be allowed to buy firearms or ammo, that is all I am saying.

No, I agee, it's a very real debate. Some veterans, returning from combat zones, should not be around guns.

And minus a medical diagnosis, who is "likely to shoot other people"?  And who gets to make that decision?

I don't think you're up enough on the topic of guns and veterans to have an opinion worth recognizing, sirs. In fact your nutty behavior in here essentially rules your opinion out on any topic. Your best move would be to have your wife go to the local pet store and buy you a soft doggy toy to chew on. Anytime you feel the urge to post start chewing instead. That would benefit this group immensely.

A great suggestion.

A vinyl squeak toy would be ideal. Perhaps there are Wolf Blitzer vinyl squeak toys is available on Glenn Beck's website.
