BBC News, Washington

Half of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the US are in Texas, according to new figures. Why?

Every way you look at it, there are a lot of people moving to Texas.

Five of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the country between 2011 and 2012 were in Texas, according to new figures from the US Census Bureau. New York is way out in front in terms of added population, but Houston is second with San Antonio and Austin fourth and fifth.

Thanks BSB.
We are far from perfect and have our problems,
but there are the upsides your article mentions.
re: "laissez-faire"
My brother and I bought some land and are building
a log cabin on the property...even we were surprised
there are ZERO building codes in the county...Nada.
The only thing that will need an inspection is the septic tank.
My brother said in Colorado where he built a cabin there
were inspectors out there all the time bothering them.

And that's a very attractive asset. BTW, put up some pictures of that cabin when you're finished.

No building codes in Texas.

Just like in Port au Prince.

No building codes in Texas.

SIRS STRAWMAN ALERT!

Who said there are "no building codes in Texas"?

No one.

There are no building codes in some counties in Texas.

And guess what?.....life has not come to a halt!

BSB it's a labor of love, but will be a nice get-away when completed later this year.
Ya think the black helicopters will be able to find us?  ;)

That's awful close to the shore. You couldn't build that close up here. They wouldn't allow it. Got flood insurance?

BSB....you are probably right some bureaucrat would have had a one-size-fits-all book
of regulations
and said we couldn't build that close....however it's not actually as close as it looks. Plus we own the pond so we control the flow to a great degree. The pond water table does not fluctuate much as far as level. I guess it was well built. Just to be safe we had a pond building professional come out and survey/shoot the spillway with a laser to make sure water would be flowing well thru the spillway before it got into the cabin. And if it was some 500 year flood we could take the backhoe and expand the spillway in an emergency. Plus as an added precaution if you look closely it's no accident that the cabin and porch has several layers of levels/steps/porch that water would have to breach before it got in the cabin. And yes we do have insurance as well.

You own the pond!

My friends uncle did the samething in texas also. But he dug it up to make it a lake so he would have a steady supply of fish and threw a ton of seeds sround so he'd have a constant sypply of variousvfruit without actually tending them. The downside is since it's growing wild its a great deal harder to get at the fruit. Bugs and out growth. The lake s not quite self sustain he still has to paddle out and feed them cheap petfood.
