I think the commercial is silly , it obviously tweaks the Gallic nose.

The French are prone to give as good as they get , prepare to be tweaked.

The French will not see it, unless somehow it is aired on the News.

GM makes little or no effort to sell Cadillacs in France, and if they did, they would run a different ad.

As I said, the commercial seems to be targeted at a particular sort of American, and I think it should be as successful as any they have done recently. Only the sales figures in the markets it is shown vs. the markets where it is not shown will reveal how effective it has been after several months.

Not made for a foreign audience, so of course they're not going to see it....as a commerical

Exactly....the kind of American that works hard with a goal of hoping to aquire a vehicle with all the bells and whistles.  Not that they deserved it, but they put in the extra work to obtain it.  THAT kind of American

This commercial tells the customer almost nothing about the car, it is nearly opposite to educational.

An appeal to humor might be pleasant , but I would not buy a car for its having a funny commercial.

I would not even buy a sandwich for the sake of tweaking France , I might buy a Champagne, or a Burgundy that was made in Napa rather than  Champagne or  Burgundy, but that is as far as I go.

Anyone who would buy an expensive car like a Cadillac based on ads is surely a fool. However, there are many fools out there. For example, Land Rover has horrible reliability issues. It has beautiful upholstery, but the damned things break down more than pretty much any vehicle on the market. And yet people buy them and will pay three times as much for one as they will for a Jeep, Honda, Hyundai or Nissan that will do everything a Rover can do.
Advertising works. You just have to target the proper audience.

Well Kimba, per xo, that must make you a fool.  Per the rest of us, here's hoping you can work hard enough to get one    8)

I did not say that it was a good car or a poor one. The car magazines really like it, but they never focus on maintenance  costs or durability. Consumers Reports does not recommend it, but seems to think it is a comfortable and adequate luxury car.

I did not say that one would have to be a fool to buy a Cadillac. I said that one had to be a fool to buy one based on this, or any, TV commercial. The commercial does not indicate the price or any of the car's more impressive features: it is an appeal to snobbery and elitism. So are most luxury car ads. Apparently, that is what sells best. Mercedes says "The Best or Nothing", and the MB is a fine car, but way too over engineered. Who needs computerized engine mounts that need replacing every 30K miles at a cost of $500 each? (There are three of these)who needs a retractable hardtop with 23 hydraulic servos that last only about 6 years?
