they want halel standard food served at the food bank. but food banks tend to get their supplies through donations, meaning it whatever they get thier hands on. what that group don`t undserstand is any action they take literally means less food overall. what they really should do is setup their own system which the folks bring the food that gets screen then take any non-halel  to exchange for vegetables or get some volunteer to pickup whatever needed food to be distributed amoungst them. the proposal they brought up will just cost more for the bank.

as I stated the banks due to the nature of it is within halel standard anyway. pork is allowed amoung the poor. that was never new

Oh , that was a good explanation.

I think I get it now.

I once delivered a few pizzas to a BOQ, the young officers there were mostly pleased but one of them was very upset that his cheese pizza was in the same bag as a sausage pizza.

The bags were made to hold two boxes each and the smell of the sausage was contaminating his halal pizza.

I had to look that up , and once I understood it, I knew that our pizzas would never be truly kosher nor halal, we didn't and probably couldn't keep the ingredients separated enough.

The basic problem is that pigs can be quite delicious.

If one is forbidden to taste bacon, ham, Spam and pork chops, they will never know this.
Just one lapse into poverty could cause the Muslim to realize how delicious pigs can be, and there goes a major ritual unifying Muslims.

lots of devote jews eat spam (mostly soviet jews) but it`s doesn`t seem to weaken the religion at all.

The tradition among American Jews is that Chinese food is exempt from Kosher laws.

The idea is that if you do not know that something is, then you are not breaking the Kosher if you eat it. However, really Observant Jews stay away from Chinese restaurants, I am told.

Most of the Jews I know do not keep Kosher, but most also have relatives who do. Only the seriously Orthodox get pissed with relatives that don't keep Kosher.

If you really don't know what is in it , you should be reluctant to eat it .

    Kosher notwithstanding.

I think that if you look at nearly any sort of processed food, you will see ingredients that you have never heard of.Every bottle of wine I have ever seen has the words "contains sulfites" on it.

Sulfites of what?

I suggest that not one person in a thousand has a clue about what a sulfite is.
I am not saying that sulfitres are toxic, though they do produce allergic reactions in some people.

I am saying that the statement that one should know what is in something before they eat it, sounds ever so logical, but in fact is not and cannot be practiced by most people who do not know diddly about organic chemistry and therefore eat all sorts of stuff without a clue as to what it is.

I recall somewhere that canned food uses pork fat for some reason and started a line of kosher product which uses a vegetable alternative.

it`s really amazing what`s in our food . I think we use crushed beatle for something in our candies.

Did you know there is a lot of seaweed in most ice-cream?

Life is too short to understand everything.

So unless there is a reason not to , I try to buy the simpler stuff.

Fewer preservatives , fewer perfumes, fewer dyes, fewer mysterious ingredients, less salt.

Cutting down to none would be too difficult , I can't .

as somebody who eats snails and live animals. I just can`t bother being picky about my food. I`m so glad I can eat peanuts and gluten. the idea of having a restrictive diet like a vegan is nightmarish to me

I think the crushed beetle is cochineal, which is processed for red dye.
It is safer than red dye from coal tars.
