I am all for regulations that steer businesses away from selling snake oil and towards them selling effective medicine.

I am for regulations that steer restaurants from selling tilapia and calling it swordfish or grouper.

I am all for regulations that steer food stores away from selling salmonella infected meat, and away from guys like Bernie Madoff.

Regulation is an absolute necessity in a capitalist society. And no matter how logical the regulation, those selling bogus crap will always complain about "too much regulation".

The State of NY recently tested some organic herbal remedies and discovered that Wall Aart and Target were selling something claiming to be St John's Wort that had not a speck of the actual herb.

Note all the successful businesses making profit now. It's totally because of government regulations.

Uh?
My business makes a profit "totally" because of gvt regulations?
My business makes a profit because we as a team work our asses off countless
hours every week catering to customers and treating our employees well.

but without those regulation your likely have a smaller customers base and a smaller business. this is not about one business ,it`s about all businesses selling safe products. you business maybe responsible enough that it may never need any government oversight but that has nothing to do with the nearby fry chicken plant who locks all the emergency exit to prevent their employees to take breaks and pay their workers so little they will never be your customers.

I hear Walmart refered as a great business model but how is the local economy in places that has a Walmart?  the one near me is in near empty mall .

totally not saying all regulations work but I really appreciate that pork in the u.s. is so safe I don`t need to eat it well done. you can`t say that about other countries.  in my twenties I remember 3 people who lost their finger to a paper cutting machines. the last guy recently who did that is because he bypassed it`s safety feature.

Unregulated business is what we had in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Rotten meat, snake oil, slave wages and disasters like the Triangle Waist fire is what we got out of that.

Regulation is needed for capitalist economies in the same way that cooking is needed for a lot of the things we eat.

If an OSHA inspector tells you how to prevent accidents from maiming or killing your employees, he can easily prevent you from getting your butt sued off.

Yes Kimba but you stated "business makes a profit totally because of gvt regulations.

That's hogwash.

I am not for "no gvt".....gvt has a small important role...but gvt isnt the reason I make a profit.

Anymore than the groundskeeper at the Super Bowl is the reason Tom Brady was the MVP of the game this year.
Sure groundskeepers play a part in making the game happen...
But to say they are the reason a certain player excels in the game is ridiculous.

SOME businesses make a profit because of regulations.  Airbag manufacturers, antilock brake component manufacturers, manufacturers of airliner "black boxes", dolphin safe fish nets, mutual fund companies, and a lot of other things. But you are right, not all make a profit because of regulations.

I misstated the totally but a pretty significant part is because of it.  Regulation mostly are reactionary to situations so by that very reason businesses are not exactly responsible enough to self regulate.

Peanut butter by the way it's made should need no oversight on how safe it is. But even that has some serious contamination scandals. In fact several incidents

Bugs and mice will get into anything they find edible. Mice and rats LOVE peanut butter. It will work better as bait than almost any sort of cheese.

There is a stipulated maximum number of insect parts roach turdlets and rodent "pellets" that can be in most foods without it being banned from the shelves, It is a small, number, but is is not zero.  Perfection, as always, is nearly impossible to attain.

There are basically two kinds of peanut butter: the creamy smooth type that has hydrogenated oils in it, and the all natural kind, in which the oil tends to separate. Both kinds come in smooth and crunchy.  Read the label.

If we had no regulations, there would be nothing about content on the label.

My favorite fraudulent product is the brand Juicy Juice, which claims to be 100% juice.

It is indeed 100% juice. But about half the juice in 100% juicy Juice Cranberry juice is apple juice. And of course, apple juice comes from where?  Michigan? Washington State? No, China.   Not that Chinese apple juice is bad for you or worse than American juice, just that they are selling a product without most customers becoming aware.

You can no longer buy a half gallon container of orange juice. They are now 59 ounces, not the 64 that would actually be a half gallon. When there was a freeze of the crops several years ago, Tropicana conspired with the other producers and they shrunk the containers.

You have to read those labels if you really want to know.  They have the technology to make stuff that tastes like any sort of juice you might want without a single bit of fruit being squeezed or harmed in the process.

the incident I refer was maybe ten years ago and I think people died from it but this is how bad it is. I recently looked it upbut couldn`t find it due to fact several more incidents about peanut butter popped up as recent as last year.

I`ll point out again the process of making it SHOULD make it fairly safe but the negligence of these factories over far exceed that.

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/former-owner-of-south-ga-peanut-butter-plant-indic/nWWNf/

This might be the egregious incident you are speaking of.

This company broke the rules a long time and probably poisoned a lot of people .

I don't think anyone objects to regulations like the ones this guy was breaking, some regulations are genuinely good ideas.

Unfortunately the regulations that are genuinely bad ideas have the same force of law as the regulations that are good ideas.

I imagine that every government regulation has at least a few people who claim that it is ruining their business and is therefore a bad regulation and excessive.

And they are never right?

Sometimes that are right, sometimes they are wrong. It is a value judgement. At least sometimes. And sometimes not.

Take Ron Paul, who once said that he was against prosecuting restaurant owners who refused service to Black people because the business owner had a greater right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. Then he muttered some foolish crap about how unwise a restauranteer would be to refuse the money of any customer. Like Ex Governor "Axehandle" Maddox.

It's a regulation. Meaning it's meant for the benifit of a singular or small group of businesses. It's for all of them . As i stated before most are reactionarily made which adds validation the businesses don't always can regulate themselves.

I've been to europe and thier less handcapppe accesable places. Even i have trouble walking around them. Lets just say regulation make life for us less agile older folks life abit easier.
