John Steinbeck knew where it was at
« on: July 08, 2015, 10:51:30 AM »
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”

That quote reminds me of a guy I knew when I first got out of the Army. We both worked at a lumberyard: I worked the lumber counter, he worked in kitchens. He always talked about how he was going to be a millionaire before he was 30 (we were both 22 at the time). At 23 he quit the lumberyard and went to work at a factory. He was still sure he would be a millionaire by 30. We lost touch over the years, and last I heard he was still working at that factory. I bet he still thinks he is going to be a millionaire, just a little later than he planned.

Instant wealth is all around us. State sponsored lotteries, casinos that are no longer restricted to just Las Vegas and Atlantic City, reality TV shows like American Idol promise instant fame and fortune. People will stand in line for days just for a chance to audition for American Idol—but the odds are stacked against them before they even sing a note—only 100 out of 10,000 auditions even get past the first round, and there are three rounds. But there they are, trying out for that one in a million chance at fame and fortune.

Join me below the fold for more.

As a people we chase wealth, often to our detriment. A large portion of our society lives to complain about high taxes, even though when we look at taxes as a share of GDP, ours are some of the lowest in the Western world. Instead of paying one more penny in taxes to provide healthcare for all, we would rather go with a system that leaves people out and is more expensive than it needs to be.

The U.S. spent $8,233 on health per person in 2010. The average spending on health care among the other 33 developed OECD countries was $3,268 per person.

The media plays a large part in this. This past week as I was perusing the web I came across a story on Forbes titled The world's highest paid celebrities 2015. The last person on the list, Kevin Hart, makes $28.5 million a year. Per the Social Security Administration the median wage in the United States for 2013 (most recent year available) is $28,031.02 a year. It would take someone earning the median wage over 1016 years to earn $28.5 million. Over a millennium to earn what the lowest paid celebrity on the top 100 list for 2015. I like Kevin Hart, I enjoy his comedy, but I certainly do not believe what he does is is worth $28.5 million a year.

Our culture is obsessed over wealth, we practically worship it. In any given year we are bombarded with messages about who is the wealthiest and what kind of houses they buy with their money, while most of us are lucky to even have enough money to put a roof over our heads. Our productivity has gone up, our wages have gone down. Even if we did everything right we still struggle. Banks can lose billions of dollars and get a government bailout—yet if you or I default on our student loans, we will have our wages garnished and our credit ruined. We do not get a bailout, even though we are the ones that build have built this country, and continue to build it.

Wealth inequality is at its widest point since the Great Depression. I grew up with parents who were children of the Depression. Growing up we never had a lot of money, but we never went without. Today, I have to watch every dollar I spend, and like millions of other Americans have difficulty saving. It is not because we live extravagant lives—we work hard and don't earn enough for our labor. At every turn our earning power is attacked with right to work laws, and union busting politicians like Scott Walker. Gov. Walker will likely get a sweet gig on Fox News after he falls out of the race for the Republican nomination, while the people whose livelihoods he destroyed will struggle to put food on the table.

Joe the Plumber recently took a union job in a Chrysler factory.
He never had a chance of making the big time, he was just a disposable prop in the failed campaign of John McCain.

As a nation we need to stop worshiping wealth. We need to realize that we are not temporarily embarrassed millionaires, and start working for the betterment of our society.

Duh!
The Left and the oligarchy loves open borders....
let in a bunch of very poor people
(future Democratic voters)
then they bitch about "wealth inequality"!
of course if you allow millions of poor people in the gap will widen.

This is not about "open borders".

This has NOTHING TO DO with "open borders".

Maybe you should get with the program, like Disney: they hired a bunch of Indians to come here in H-1 visas and take over the jobs of Americans. The Americans, who were making up to $100,000 a year because of their skills, were required to TRAIN the Indians, who will get paid perhaps half of the Americans.

But think of the savings!

They would call you Sahib. You could feel like a Rajah.

There could be 2 billion billionaires...as long as they made their money legally, what's it to me.  I'm not jealous, or in your case, angry that they make so much more than you.  It's wealthy folks that pay the vast functions of this Government to run.  The more you tax them the more unstable you make this country (and NO, professor literal, I'm not referring to you personally taxing them.  It's in reference to your political ilk at the state and Federal levels, that have no problem taxing people into oblivian, just to make you feel better)

News flash, Socialism doesn't make "healthy prosperous citizens"  It makes nearly everyone equally miserable, outside of the uber elite rich class, that have conveniently legislated themselves out of having to adhere to such policies

I like Kevin Hart, I enjoy his comedy, but I certainly do not believe what he does is is worth $28.5 million a year.

What an awful thought. This author should be ashamed.

Each fan of this comic is buying a few tickets  or observing a few advertisements what each ones pays is a tiny part of the whole.

A comic that appeals to a large number of people is producing a large value, it is entirely unfair to restrict his harvest of his own product.
Should advertisers be restricting his payments? His agent should take 90%? The government should regulate his pay to keep it reasonably low, or tax it till it is gone?

Should the owners of Ball Teams tell their star players that they will be given a living wage and no more , while hundreds of thousands of fans clamor to buy tickets and jerseys?

I am not a bit sorry that James Taylor has a song in the top ten, or that he has had dozens in the top forty, I have only given James Taylor a few dollars myself but his songs have served a few million like me , if anything he is underpaid.

If you have a classic car , there is a real value to its sale , and this value is not a dime more nor less than what a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Shame on someone who  points out that a model A is not a practical transport and should be cheap, there are plenty of guys that want to pay well for that classic and they determine its worth by their collective esteem. Should there be a car Czar to determine the results of auction before the bidding?

That i can answer kevin hart took years to get where he's at and was even delayed. If anything his career maybe crippled due to some still questionable decisions. Meaning he could of gotten more pay.

Comedians pay is a very complex thing. Jay leno lived soully on his weekend comedy gigs while working on the tonight show and never spent a single dime of that pay.

How is this about cars?

The fact is that capitalism does not benefit people fairly.  It creates enormous wealth on one side and breeds poverty and despair on the other.
There is NO WAY it will ever result in any different outcome without some sort of intervention.

Compared to what?...LOL
Cuba?
North Korea?
Libya?
Iran?

Free market pro-business capitalism may not be perfect,
but where are shit-hole countries that have free-market pro business capitalism?

Look at the list!
What type of system do most of the shit-holes have?
It's obvious as hell!

Norway, Denmark, Sweden all have economies that provide better for their people, and consider this: they all offer longer vacations, maternity leave and healthcare to every citizen.

You are misled and mistaken.

Now go roll in your money.

Norway, Denmark, Sweden all have economies that developed for centuries in Capitalism.

Their socialism is still limited , not so strong that it strangles further development.

To me it looks as if socialism is something that capitalists can do with their surplus, but poor countries really can't support and develop themselves also.

I note that Isis is planning a very socialist sort of system, this is good news to us and their other enemies.

The greatest good for the greatest number will always be a mixture of capitalism and socialism. Scandinavia has limited resources and is frozen a third of the year, and still has abolished poverty. There are still a lot of major companies in Scandinavia, and rich people as well.

The advantages of having a huge number of unemployed on hand to use as tools to keep the workforce from demanding a fairer share of their labors is not to the long term benefit of anyone, but since it temporarily keeps profits high, it is what the Oligarchy does to the people of this country. If everyone can be productive, eventually everyone will benefit.

Isis is not a political system at all: it is a medieval religious  cult that is selling off the treasures of the past and non-renewable resources.

NEWS FLASH....the reason we have so many unemployed is due in large part to the stifling socialist policies, mandates, and taxation being applied to those very businesses & "rich" who do the vast majority of the hiring.  Small and mid size businesses simply can't financially survive in such a climate.  Only those deemed "to big to fail", and even then will demand tax payers to bail any instability they may be having

That is total bullshit. Jobs have been replaced by robots and sent overseas. When The Donald has his ties made in China to save a dollar or two per tie, an American seamstress is thrown out of work.
