I learned about electronics during my high school years, rebuilding a WWII era HAM radio.
I became interested in bombs and trigger circuits after reading some spy novel 'way back when where some bomber supposedly planted a bomb that couldn't be disarmed. Of course the good guys found a new method to defeat the various triggers and disarm it. I devised a new trigger to defeat their new method.
When I enlisted in the Army, I originally wanted to go into Explosive Ordinance Disposal, with a view toward becoming an international terrorist once I got out - I figured the best way to learn to build bombs was learn how to take them apart first. My girlfriend and mom were horrified I might want a job where your first mistake could be your last, and they talked me into pursuing another field of electronics study, cryptographic equipment repair. That required a top secret crypto clearance, so naturally I never told the people doing my background investigation about my unrequited dream of being an international terrorist.
(Sigh)
