People will always have a motive to vote for benefits that benefit themselves, and as a rule, will vote against taxes that are opposed upon them.  The idea that taxes are "punishment" rather than fees for services provided is a ruse.  It is NOT TRUE than all tax cuts result in more revenue received than would other wise have been received. The ratbag right persists in claiming otherwise because they prefer to appear righteous than greedy.

The truth is that many taxes are not imposed for the purpose of increasing the money available , rather for the purpose of encouraging or discouraging certain things that Congress likes or doesn't.

I don't know who has ever said that ALL tax cuts result in increased tax revenue, but it is pretty clear that some do. This is prone to be the result of situations in which taxation is presently high enough to hamstring good business practices and hinder hiring.

Now where is this threshold?  How much tax is the level that is too much to reap the best receipts?

How much tax is the amount that begins to inhibit good economic activity?

If it is possible to know where the line really is , that would be useful knowledge, but it begs this question, should taxes be one cent higher than they must be?

All government is some form of social engineering. Making murder and cannibalism illegal is a form of social engineering.
Any time we set any standard for the behavior of citizens it is social engineering. We can argue about how to engineer society properly, but it is always social engineering.

Unless you mean the government that  governs the most efficiently and transparently. Government can solve many problems. Electing people who think that "government is the problem" should be banned from running for office, because they are simplistic assholes.

  Big government is a terrible way to deal with individuals in large numbers.

  The bigger and more clumsy the government the more they will impose standardized solutions.

     There ought to be a strict limit on the amount of the GDP that can be devoted to government , as it is there is no legal obstacle to  a government that costs more than the value of the planet.

     Government has proper uses, facilitating the common welfare is a lot better for the government than production of the common welfare.

If you have big corporations, many of them will be greedy and screw the public. Ma Bell did this for a century and is still doing it. Comcast, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Coal, Banks too Big to Fail.
The only thing that can control these is a government powerful enough to bring them down.
This country is not living up to its promise because Big Government is not doing its job. This is due to politicians of both parties, but more the Republicans than the Democrats.
