If gun regulation has an effect on crime, it must be small.

But small effects might still be worthwhile if they are in the right direction and do not cost more than their positive effect.

But nuisance rules like the assault weapons ban have positive effect (if any) so small that it gets lost in the margin of error.

The presidents proposed rule changes this time would not really change the situation much, the most expensive part of it would be to triple the people keeping tabs on the FFL paperwork.

The holders of FFLs commit a handful of infractions annually , the people who fail background checks never get prosecuted for attempting to buy a gun, is there really a job for these guys?

Sometimes I feel that the whole point is the impression made , real effect is just beside the point.

Well, you kind of nailed it....in that Obama was all about "style" and precious little to do with substance.  It was meant to "look like he cared", even managed to produce a tear, though how sincere it was is still up for debate.  Point being, as you rightly deduced, the substance of what Obama said was nil, and much of it false, but one of the signs of great artistry was that the presentation overshadowed the substance.  As political theater, it put Donald Trump's rantings in the shade
