The question then becomes, does he alienate more of the conservative base than he's picking up in Democrats & Union Members?  The good news is that the voter turnout to these primaries have been HUGE........for Republicans.  Can't say the same for the Democrats.  In fact, it was Sanders claiming how a "larger voter turn out favors Democrats, while a smaller voter turnout favors Republicans"  Could be he's demonstrated to be wrong yet again

The theory, from the Republican perspective, used to be that the people who really care about it, are the ones who learn a lot on the subject and put up with hardship to vote.

Thus a rainy November, especially on election day, is Republican weather.

The Democrats seem to understand this the same way, thus everything that makes voting easy to accomplish they favor.

Does Donald Trump disrupt this whole concept?

I note that numbers are up for Republican voters so far in the primaries.

Perhaps Trump is exciting some people who would usually be apathetic?

Some re registered to vote for Trump, but some surely also did this to vote against Trump.

Whatever the proportions that you'd be completely guessing at, the point remains that not only is Trump pulling Democrats & Union members from the Democrat ranks, he's generating a massive swell of GOP voters, compared to the apathetic nature of the Democrat turnouts, at both their rallies and primaries

If someone were drawn from outside the party to vote for Trump, would this person have any excitement for a different Republican?.

I don't think a bait and switch would work for most of them, not when not voting at all is an option.

The Donald has clear positions on labor. He thinks that neckties that retail for $50 each should be made in China.  He has said he opposes raising the minimum wage. He has declared that Americans make too much.

A union worker has to be areal dolt to vote for The Donald.

There are a lot of dolts around. It is hard to kick yourself in the balls, but there are those that will try ant try until they succeed.

Cruz will have a problem with the members of my union because he furloughed a lot of us .

Of course the president was just as involved in the sequester kerfluffle , but candidate Trump was not.

Why should a Union guy like Hillary?

Hillary opposed "right to work" laws, which make organizing and maintaining a union far more difficult. Every Republican is all for weakening unions. Union workers earn more for the same job. Workers tend to favor getting paid more, rather than less. Union workplaces are safer. Union workers have better benefits.

Unions with too much power over their members are a pain in the neck.

If you have no choice but to join the union , why should the union care what you think, want or need?

In this town, the Democrats get a small minority of the vote but even here the union gives a lot of the dues to the Democrats, for no apparent reason.

The Democrats take the union support totally for granted and really seldom do anything to earn it.

The Union takes the membership for granted and seldom rocks the boat in favor of the membership or individuals thereof.

Laws that perpetuate this cycle are intended to benefit Democratic party stalwarts and entrench Unions much more than they are meant to benefit Union membership , which is made up of individuals who might well be disgusted with he deal they are offered.
