The usual gist is that Isis is a sworn enemy of the US and hates us because it hates our freedoms or something. But Isis is really more of a combination of mafiosos and religious lunatics, and is mostly not interested in conquest of the United States. The restoration of the ancient  Muslim Caliphate does not involve anything in the Western hemisphere. It would be easy to simply make a deal with them for the US and Isis to ignore each other. EXCEPT that Syria has a border with Israel. We are in reality fighting so that Israel will have nicer neighbors. And, of course, even though the US may not need the oil, US companies need oil to sell, and the more the better.

Americans can normally get along with strange, oppressive and disgusting things going on abroad so long as the media does not make a big deal of it.

Female circumcision has been going on since the Fall of the Roman Empire or even farther back, and no one in the West even was aware of it. The same is true with Koreans eating puppydogs, the French eating horsemeat, and Haitians eating kittycats. But the press did not focus on any weird foreign practices until the television era.

Describing Koreans eating Fido on the radio is not much of a story, bu showing doggies in the market in cages on the day before they become lunch, well, that makes for the sort of television story that people cannot resist.

When I was in elementary school, the only countries that were mentioned were England, France and Germany. Occasionally you would hear something about the Philippines, Japan or Korea. China did not exist, since we did not recognize it. The Russians (they never called them Soviets) were important only because they were the reason we had to duck and cover in case they nuked the Chevrolet Plant in Kansas City, Kansas. It was well known that the Russians did not like Chevrolets.

Are far simpler than that.  ISIS believes in the notion that you either convert to Islam, are to be subjugated by it, or die.  And Muslims that don't take up that calling are far more at risk than foreigners or the dreaded "west"

That said, ANYONE & EVERYONE who isn't abiding by the 1st 2 tenets, is at risk for the 3rd option

Their most idealistic goal is to restore the Caliphate. They have no plans to convert the five billion non Muslims.

But mostly they are a small group of fanatics that have recruited a much larger bunch of ignorant of thugs to serve as cannon fodder.

Never claimed their intention was to convert everyone.  ISIS and all its radical islamic cousins are in the business of bringing about 3 things....have people convert to THEIR version of Islam...be subjegated by it....or die

And its their religious comittment that makes them dangerous to ALL...especially Muslims who have not embraced their mutated version of Islam

do people in america know isis attack mainly muslims?

that is mainly a product of proximity
other muslims are easy targets for isis
isis is mostly thousands & thousands of miles away from whom they'd rather kill
Israel is closer but a more difficult target
so for now isis kills more muslims
but i wouldn't take to much solace in that fact because they'd rather kill you

Just pointing out that we here may have a mistaken idea who the enemy is and note I'll go even further and say some here even attack non Muslims because of this

The Christians and the Pagans that live in Isis controlled territory are being wiped out.
Our Secretary of state John Kerry calls this Genocide.
I suppose the Jews of that area have been driven out already.

The Caliphate will never have a firm border , it is a religious concept more than a nation, and its stated goal is constant expansion, as the Koran directs.

Indeed.....anyone and everyone who has not converted or willing to be subjugated, is a target to be killed

The greatest schism in Islam is between the Shia and the Sunni.

http://www.ibtimes.com/shia-sunni-deadly-ancient-schism-islamic-world-213671

There are other sorts of Islam like the Sufi, but the big two are Sunni like the Saudi Arabians and the Shia like the Iranians.

They disagree a bit over who the true heir of Mohammed is and the proper manner of prayer etc. stuff that is really insider concerns and we are not going to understand well.

These factions have been in bloody battle since shortly after the death of the Prophet himself.

So that is not the new part.

Nor is it really good news to us, it means there is practically no way to make friends with all of them, making friends on one side will antagonize the others.

Nearly everyone killed bu Isis has been a Muslim, the majority being Shites. I don't think the leaders take the restoration of the Caliphate seriously Their main enemies are other Muslims. The US is an enemy mostly because it is attempting to exterminate Isis.

Just as Reagan created Mara Salvatrucha, Juniorbush created Isis. Blowback from stupid wars have caused the main problems of the US ever since WWII. Republicans have been the worst offenders and therefore need to be deprived of of office if we are to have peace.

Nearly everyone killed bu Isis has been a Muslim,...

Error.

They are showing no mercy to Christians and Pagans. It does not look like big numbers because the majority of all is Muslim, but they are killing the whole community of Christians and whole towns of Pagans.

...so much so, this Administration has even gone so far as to publical label the effort genocide.  Not to mention that following 911 and our having removed Saddam from power, Iraq was stable, was progressing to a democratic nation, AlQeada had been limited to only local attacks, and ISIS was a mere blip

And what changed?......

Obama & Clinton took over.  And the rest, as they say, is history
